Met Gala co-host Jennifer Lopez showed up in a custom Schiaparelli creation displaying 2.5 million silver foil bugle beads and which took over 800 hours to construct. With all of that in mind, it pains us to have to say…

Meh. Don’t get us wrong. It’s an undeniably gorgeous creation, but it also looks pretty much like 90% of the gowns she’s worn in the last twenty years. This is the Met Gala. You’re the co-host. Step it up. The thing about J Lo is, while she has a history of high-impact red carpet serves over the years, the only image she knows how to convey is the classic J Lo image. She’s always selling herself, so when you ask her to use fashion to interpret a theme that doesn’t have anything to do with her, she defaults to giving you more J Lo. Her style team says that the design was inspired by a butterfly, which is a kind of “sleeping beauty,” although that seems like an advanced yoga stretch, especially since it barely looks like a butterfly. In related news, the styling here is shockingly bad. Her hair and makeup look terrible, the necklace is overwhelmed by the dress (one large colorful stone would’ve worked better), and the bag and shoes look cheap. J Lo, girl. Pull yourself together.
