Elle Fanning may not get away from the Disney Princess associations until she’s washing the grays out of her hair, but if someone can do a take on it that’s a little interesting, edgy or weird, we have to pay our respects. It’s nearly impossible to do anything interesting in fashion with the concept of fairy tale princesses, but Balmain supplied her with a Met Gala gown that leans into her own persona while giving it a slightly off-putting undertone.

More directly, it’s likely to be a reference to the glass “time flowers” in “The Garden of Time.” The effect is unique and hard to forget, although it’s not without its flaws and drawbacks. For one, every time she moved, those birds bounced around her shoulders stiffly, ruining the fluid effect of the gown. Second, it’s WAY too tight in the bust. Third, it gets much less interesting as you travel down. The skirt winds up being a big nothing. But for a moment, when she stands still and poses, it really does look like she’s wearing a dress made out of glass or water. We’d have liked more of a fantasy take on the makeup. Going all wet effect is probably the least interesting way to style this.
