We had to do a quick drive-by assessment of this look for Cosmopolitan the night of the Met Gala, but in the light of day, our somewhat tepid assessment is being rethought.

First, we’ll say this about Kim: For good or ill (mostly ill), she’s extremely adept at creating these viral moments at the Met Gala and it’s something of a testament to her star power that she can do it even in a pilly old sweater. Maison Margiela assures us that the sweater was a deliberate choice, describing it as “a pale grey thistle-washed boiled cashmere cardigan brushed to achieve a swan’s-down texture worn in a déshabillé gesture.” LOL. Okay, John Galliano. We are also informed that her corset is made from an eighteenth century brocade fabric “rewoven in jacquard silver threads” (which just makes it sound like a reproduction of an 18thC fabric) and that the skirt is made of silver metal leaves and flowers linked with silver chain. The effect of the skirt is gorgeous. The effect of the corset on her is horrifying. A lot of people theorized that the sweater was some last-minute addition to cover some sort of wardrobe malfunction, but that’s hard to believe for a whole host of reasons. John Galliano would not take credit for a pilly sweater in order to cover Kim Kardashian’s shame and Kim Kardashian would never admit to even having a pilly sweater in her possession. No, it’s deliberate. Truth be told, if the sweater wasn’t such a mess and the corset wasn’t giving us body horror shudders, this would be a pretty and chic look. But it wouldn’t have been nearly as discussed as it is, which means once again, Kim knows what she’s doing.
