Let’s all enjoy the last time we’re going to see Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande on a red carpet not engaging in cosplay or method dressing.

Because you just know they have months of pink gowns and green gowns lined up.

This is striking and well-executed, producing a red carpet moment designed to turn heads and inspire lots of pictures. It’s taking the Garden of Time theme a little too literally for our tastes. And once you strip away the petals, it’s a pretty standard Thom Browne ensemble. We think it works, but mostly because she does a lot to lend it some edge. The dragonfly is an insane touch.

It’s surprisingly understated for her and for the Met Gala. As we said, this seems like them taking a bit of a breather before the no doubt epic press campaign to come starting in about four months. It’s pretty. The little whosiewhatsis face thingies actually work for us. Facial accessories can be gimmicky and distracting, but we like that these have an abstract shape (literal birds or insects would’ve been too much) and that they match the dress, feeling more like an extension of it than accessories to it. It’s a quietly interesting look.
