At sunrise, the klaxons sounded and we leapt out of bed. “THERE IS A ZENDAYA SIGHTING,” we screamed into the dawn. “A ZENDAYA MOMENT IS COMING!” Unfortunately, we hate it. The star of Challengers hit the Sydney premiere red carpet with an important message subtly hidden in her style choices.

Said subtle, nuanced message being “HEY I’M IN A SEXY TENNIS MOVIE.” Yeah, that’s gonna be a no from us, girl. This is taking red carpet method dressing to novelty t-shirt levels. Look, she and Law Roach are rightly considered the reigning queens of the red carpet, but their turn toward these overly themey looks are not a thing we can support. It renders fashion itself as branding instead of as a tool to use in promoting your brand. To be fair, it’s easier to accept when it’s done well, such as Margot Robbie’s whole deal in 2023 or even Zendaya’s looks on the Dune: Part Two promo tour. For us, what makes this effort not work is that it completely lacks any subtlety and more importantly, it’s just not all that killer a look. She’s making it sing, but the dress itself? Gimmicky and uninteresting. She’d have been better off in a gown that referenced tenniswear.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:
From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Married to a champion on a losing streak (Mike Faist – West Side Story), Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick (Josh O’Connor – The Crown) – his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend. As their pasts and presents collide, and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself, what will it cost to win.
