Now, you couldn’t possibly have thought that we were going to restrict the Oscars red carpet showdown to just the lady attendees, did you? While we may have been a bit underwhelmed by the Oscars style choices, especially among the men this year, it wasn’t hard figuring out which two men wore our favorite looks.
Tom’s Pick: Colman Domingo in Louis Vuitton
Tom’s defense: As we noted once or twice before, the man put on the most stylish menswear-based Oscar campaign in history. He ended the run exactly as we’d hoped, by showing off some of that queer, Black, masculine flamboyance that characterized his style all year. The tux is gorgeous, the buttons are fabulous, and the explosion of jewelry (one ring was Bayard Rustin’s) made it stand out among every other look on the red carpet. This is the ultimate victory lap look.
Lorenzo’s Pick: Taylor Zakhar Perez in Prada
Lo’s defense: I get that Colman’s look is a tough act to follow, but I wanted to make a case for minimalism to contrast his maximalist approach. Taylor has had a red-hot career year and this was a really smart way to make sure he quietly stood out without looking like he was trying. It’s a beautiful color and a unique take for the night. He couldn’t be better suited to it. Simply put, he looks beautiful.
