Carey Mulligan in Valentino Couture at the SPACEMAN New York Premiere

Carey Mulligan is in the bizarre position of having to make her way through awards season as a Best Actress nominee while also having to promote her Adam Sandler Netflix movie. Rather than switch up her style in response to each situation, she’s just barreling through in prestige looks whether the setting calls for them or not.

We realize that she’s not much of a fashion girl at heart. She’d clearly rather put on something relatively easy to wear and not fuss too much with the details. We try to be understanding of that preference, but then she turns around and does something like this; wearing a couture Valentino piece (to an event where she could’ve gotten away with a simple day dress) and doing absolutely nothing with it. What’s the point in wearing couture if you’re going to minimize its impact? To be fair, the design just isn’t all that great to our eyes.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:
Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Adam Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late. Directed by Johan Renck and based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia, the film also stars Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini.
