Palm Springs International Film Awards 2024: BARBIE Star Margot Robbie in Balmain

Hmm. This is the time when we start making vague but increasingly formalized predictions about what all of the awards-buzzy people are likely to wear on Oscar night. Barbie star and producer Margot Robbie had herself not only a banner career year (picking up north of $50 million), but she enacted the greatest movie promotion red carpet tour possibly ever, by recreating a string of iconic Barbie looks in life-sized proportions, tapping into a whole audience of people who never follow red carpets and helping (on some level) to propel the film to its billion-dollar box office. It’s generally understood that, while she got to wear most of what she had planned for the tour, the SAG-AFTRA strike left a few frocks on the table. Since the strike has ended and we entered the “For Your Consideration” portion of awards season, she’s unpacked a few Barbie or Barbie-esque looks that were probably put aside last summer. Anyway, the point of this recap (most of which you probably knew already, so thank you for your patience assuming you’re still reading this) is to set up one question.

You think she’s getting a little tired of it? Honestly, we wouldn’t blame her at all. Part of the reason we tend to dislike cosplay on the red carpet in most cases is because it’s so limiting for the actor, so lacking in the kind of self-expression that makes for good style. Don’t get us wrong, this is a super-cute dress on her and we don’t have a single issue with how she looks here. Maybe we’re inferring things that aren’t in evidence, but this feels a little perfunctory. Anyway, she looks fine. We just wonder if it’s still worth holding out hope that she’ll unveil some spectacular Barbie look on the big night, like Peaches & Cream or Crystal Barbie.
