Y’know, it seems to us that starring in a Wes Anderson movie wound up doing wonderful things for Bryan Cranston’s personal style. He was always a reliably turned out, professionally elegant feature on a red carpet, but ever since he did Asteroid City, his style has gotten appealingly quirky.

Granted, some of this could be due to the freedom that comes with age and the desire to not grow stale, but whatever spurred it on matters less to us than the results. We wouldn’t call this a perfectly styled look. The combination of black turtleneck, gray striped shirt and grey plaid double-breasted jacket is both a little too much and also not enough at the same time. What we mean is that there’s some adventurous pattern and style-mixing going on, but with everything in the same neutral color zone, the impact is lessened. A little stripe of red or even (*shudder*) a red turtleneck would help make it all pop and keep it unified. Love the shoes, but if you’re going to make colorful socks the focal point of your look, make sure they’re not going to slip down and sag. Nitpickery aside, we really enjoy this look and we hope he keeps traveling down Quirky Road. In matters of style, it’s so much better for senior men to loosen things up a little as they age and learn to have fun with the options available to them. Conservative, respectable style options for senior women can still be pretty chic (the standard Chanel suit) but the standard respectable options for senior men are dull as shit. Better to shoot for disgraceful than wallow in mediocre, we say. We would have suggested he sport a huge boutonniere or colorful pocket square, but that may be wandering too far into “gay supervillain” territory.
