It’s so rare seeing Beyonce on a red carpet that the prospect of assessing two of her looks at once has left us a little discombobulated. As we’ve noted many times before, no other pop star with the possible exception of Gaga so thoroughly blurs the line separating fashion from costume, so when we see her working a step-and-repeat, we know we have to recalibrate our settings a little.

Speaking of recalibrating, this Thom Browne piece from his first couture collection doesn’t even look like the brand’s aesthetic, which just goes to show you how much stylists and stars need to stop reaching for his tweedy little gray suits and kilts so much. We’re not entirely sure what the crotch embroidery is supposed to be, but it reminds us of biblical descriptions of angels. The outfit’s great, but we aren’t convinced the gloves or the booties work with it.

Here’s what we mean about the difference between fashion and costume. Sure, this is technically a garment produced by a fashion house in order to be purchased and worn by anyone who wants to, but it’s clearly got way more to do with stagewear and costume design than couture. As such, it’s pretty much impossible to critique. Like we’re gonna suggest what sort of shoes or earrings to wear with this? Whether her hair and makeup are up to the task? These things just don’t apply when the piece is as unique and high impact as this. She looks fabulous. It would be impossible for her not to in this.
