Princess Cathy has been out on the streets serving looks in support of World Mental Health Day. Yesterday, she and Prince Bill visited Factory Works in Birmingham.

It’s giving real estate agent crossed with “women laughing at salads,” but as plain and corporate as the look is, it’s not without some touching and powerful symbolism. First, yellow and black are the colors of two youth mental health charities in the UK, YoungMinds and Beyond. The former encourages people to wear yellow on World Mental Health Day. Her star-shaped earrings were a gift from Maidenhead Rugby Club coach, Sarah Renton, and were made in memory of Sarah’s daughter, Issy. When people talk about royals sending messages in their clothing or jewelry choices, it’s almost always along these sort of lines (paying tribute to host countries or initiatives rather than to members of their own family). This will never be among our favorite of Kate’s pantsuits, but it’s a strong look with a real message behind it.

Today, the Princess arrived at Nottingham Trent University to hear how they’re working to ensure that their students have the right mental health support around them. Kate’s been entering her neutral phase recently, and while we have no doubt some folks will insist that she’s trying to copy her sister-in-law’s signature SoCal style by doing so, this is about as far from Meghan’s slouchy, casual chic as you can get. We tend to think most public-facing people should avoid falling into a neutral trap, if only because colors photograph better, but Kate’s public style has been as colorful as the late Queen’s, so this latest turn feels a little fresh. She looks great and we’re surprised to admit that the slightly darker neutrals of the accessories work pretty well, although we’d have liked those pumps to be a shade or two darker.
