A whole bunch of Barbies and Barbie supporters came out to work some eye-popping fashion at the LA premiere of Barbie (star Barbies Margot Robbie and Issa Rae got the spotlight treatment and all of the Kens in attendance are here). When we say “eye-popping,” we mean that some of these looks are terrible.
Alexandra Shipp in Miu Miu
It looks like her dress is melting. We suppose that’s the point of the design, but we’ve never loved the “I’ve come undone” style of dress. If you want to wear a bralette with a skirt, go for it, but this is just ugly to our eyes.
America Ferrera in St. John
She’s got to be coordinating with Margot’s team, because she was at her side through most of the tour wearing neutrals to Margot’s pinks and the first time Margot hit a premiere in black, here’s America, finally in the pink. Unfortunately, all of her pinks look terrible together. Can’t say we love the design of the outfit, although we might be convinced if the top fit her correctly.
Billie Eilish
She’s clearly having fun with it and being true to herself. We’ve always been very supportive of her desire to not be slotted into some sort of style box or mode of presentation, but the proportions here hurt our feelings. From the waist to the floor is just awful.
Dove Cameron in Ellie Misner
This is kind of pretty, although we tend to think you need a more vivid pink if you’re going to pair it with black. She needs some jewelry.
Dua Lipa in Bottega Veneta
It’s a shame it’s tight in the bust, because this is a really hot look other than that.
Gal Gadot in JW Anderson
We guess it’s kind of a flex to show up at a Barbie premiere in a brown dress. The fit in the bodice is terrible and the overall design just looks like a pile of leather.
Hari Nef in Celine
Simple and very cute. We’re surprised by how much we like that ruffled bust. She could’ve used more jewelry too.
Karrueche Tran in Christian Siriano
Credit to her for styling the hell out of it, but the outfit’s pretty boring once you get past the color. Also, there really is such a thing as too many bangles.
Kate McKinnon in Kallmeyer
Sapphic Barbie, looking stylish.
Nicki Minaj in Alaïa
We don’t love this. The skirt looks too flimsy and the top looks like it belongs with another outfit. The leather accents are nice, though.
Shay Mitchell in Shushu/Tong
We would normally hate this for being so twee and cutesy-poo, but this is the time and place for it. Even so, that skirt doesn’t look like it belongs with the rest of the design.
Trixie Mattel
She’s in her glory.
