President Barbie hit the London premiere red carpet in the expected pink frock, but it really feels like something of an afterthought, because Issa Rae wore a much better dress to the photo call. But first, the pink frock in question:
It’s…just okay. She’s been sporting some pretty high-end looks throughout this tour, so it’s something of a surprise to see her wearing something that, well… doesn’t look expensive. We’re sure it probably is, but it’s an underwhelming design and there are a lot of puckered seams. The color’s great, of course. The style is fine, but it doesn’t feel fresh. Given how over the top the style has been amongst the Barbies and Kens on this tour, it also feels disappointingly underwhelming for a London premiere. She recovered pretty fabulously for the photo call later that night, with the cast lighting up the London Eye:
Maybe she just needs to get away from the relentless Barbiefication of this tour and just wear hot dresses that appeal to her, because this looks spectacular. We could quibble about some details, like the yoke of the neckline looking a bit too thick or the fact that the dress has no shape to it, but the color, pattern and vibe are all really fun. In fact, it feels like a Barbie dress while avoiding all of the Barbie cosplay cliches. We just wish the shoes had a little more pop to them.
