SCHMIGADOON! Star Dove Cameron covers the latest issue of ELLE Singapore magazine photographed by Alvin Kean Wong and styled by Heather Picchiottino.
On starting her career in musical theatre: “Musical theatre was really where I cut my teeth and became the performer that I am and it’s what inspired me to pursue this as a career,” she recalls. “It was such a good education, because when you’re performing live every night, there are challenges that you don’t have when you are on camera, obviously, there can be no mistakes, but also every night when you’re doing a show eight times a week, you have to make it new for the audience. It’s the first time these people are seeing it, so you have to find all of these new layers to the character constantly. It’s a very intense character study.”
Fleshing out characters who are flawed and fully human are part of why Cameron loves to act. “It’s this safe world in which you are given total permission to leave everything behind, live in the present moment and connect to another person in the agreed-upon reality that you are both taking up space in. There’s something really magical about that.”
