Well, this all appears to be in order, based on the unwritten rules of Hollywood success. Rachel Zegler landed the role of a lifetime when she was picked out of obscurity (note all of the cliches in this sentence) to play Maria in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. When she hit her first red carpets and went on her first publicity tour, she smartly worked a look we’d call Classic Ingenue; pale, princessy, pretty. But now that she’s spread her wings and she’s starring in her first superhero flick, she’s moved on to the next style phase on the career track: Hottie.
It’s such a classic look in a lot of ways that it almost feels like a rite of passage for any mainstream ladystar on the way up. It’s giving Lea Michele circa 2013. There’s nothing new or fresh about the style, but there’s also nothing wrong with taking it out for a spin. She’s young, she’s hot, she’s got access to all kind of fashion and she’s famous. Get your hair done big, put on a mini-dress and strap on those platform heels, we say. It’s all a little tacky, but in a sexy-cute way.
