Boy, everyone seemed to turn on Harry last night on social media. We don’t know if everyone sensed he was about to snatch the Album of the Year trophy from Beyoncé or if folks just finally hit the wall on his more flamboyant style, but the response to this look was decidedly negative:

And honestly, we kind of love it. It’s fun, sexy, bold, and colorful. People love to accuse him of queer-baiting, a term so amorphous that it often winds up as a criticism against actual queer artists, but we think that kind of thinking is distressingly narrow. What is queer about this specifically? Just because you can picture a whole range of queer artists wearing something like this doesn’t mean that colors and crystals and skin-baring are solely the aesthetic of queer men. To us, it’s a good thing that men who aren’t outwardly queer – or put more bluntly, straight men – are feeling free enough to not be bound by traditional notions of masculinity. It’s not even all that outrageous a look for a pop star when you consider what a lot of lead singers were wearing through the glam rock, disco and new wave movements. Bowie would approve. Elton would approve. Prince would approve. That’s all we need to know.
