Madam Beyoncé rarely walks a red carpet if she can get away with it, so when our editor at Cosmopolitan asked us early last night to include her in our writeup, we knew we weren’t likely to see pictures of her outfit for the night until well after the ceremony started. Now, the official reason behind her lack of a carpet walk was that she was stuck in traffic. We have no reason to suggest that’s not true, but we think even if she’d shown up on time she probably would’ve high-tailed it inside without doing any interviews or stopping for pictures. It’s just how she rolls. One of her greatest strengths as an artist is her own unshakeable self-knowledge. She knows who she is – and while she’s quite clearly a once-in-a-generation talent, she’s also someone who doesn’t really fuss with fashion all that much.
Everything Beyoncé wears in public is some form of stagewear. Sure, this is technically a dress provided to her by Gucci, but even for that highly flamboyant house, this whole look comes off as a bit much. This isn’t a dress for standing on a red carpet and posing for pictures. It’s a dress for standing on stage and performing – or in this case, accepting an award. As such, it works really great in that setting. She’s glowing, she’s sparkling, she looks hot af and you can’t keep your eyes off her. But if we’re doing a fashion critique, the proportions are way off, the textiles don’t coordinate well at all and the gloves just don’t work with it.
