Vanity Fair Oscar Party: Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith in Dolce & Gabbana

It’s Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, everyone! Oh, it’s been so long!

Fine. We know most people hit the wall on hearing anything more about the Slap Heard Round the World – and truth be told, we don’t really have another thing to say about it. But we were kind of fascinated by the reports of them showing up at the Vanity Fair party and dancing the night away to cheering crowds. Not that we think he should have been publicly shunned or anything; just that the whole night felt like a bunch of people trying very hard not to notice the elephant in the room. We suppose we can’t blame anyone for that. After the last couple of years, we’d want to put any tenseness behind us and party with our peers if we could.

We love the drama and shimmer of her gown but we don’t think the colors really pop for her. Deeper or richer shades are where it’s at for her. We hate the giant knot at her neckline. It almost ruins the effect of the cape. He didn’t change his outfit, but we kind of wonder if there wasn’t some intent hand-holding and talking-down going on between events. We can just imagine Jada handing him off to his friends and mentors while she went and got changed.

He released a pretty good apology statement in light of the news that the Academy is meeting to debate disciplinary actions. We don’t think there’s a chance in hell they’d ever attempt to diminish his win or take away his trophy. That would be a public relations disaster for them, given the decades of denying recognition to Black actors and filmmakers. It seems likely that his membership will be suspended for a time. We imagine that if he comes back next year to hand out the Best Actress award, as is tradition, it’ll be one hell of an Oscar moment. Still, we reiterate what we said yesterday: this is just sad all around.

It’s crazy that Chris Rock hasn’t said a word.
