Well, there’s no use in being coy about it. Words are about to be eaten. Our words. You see, Carrie-Anne Moss stepped out onto the Matrix Resurrections red carpet in a custom Oscar de la Renta and shut us down completely regarding a topic about which we may have gotten a teensy bit whiny.

In terms of shape and style, this is a perfectly lovely and appropriate gown for a major film premiere, even if we do think that she is the only thing preventing it from looking a little fusty and matronly. Actually, that’s not quite true. She’s doing a lot of the heavy lifting here just by the nature of her innate coolness and some very low-key styling. But there’s no denying that one element of the design here turns this whole look into something spectacular and clever:

The design team at Oscar de la Renta executed a perfect homage to the Matrix films’ iconic digital rain effect. You can see some of the work being done and the final product in motion in these Insta posts:

It’s really well done and the rather basic (if impeccably executed) design of the dress and the low-key styling of her face and hair make much more sense when you view it all as a backdrop for this sequined homage. As for how she shut our mouths…

We’ve been noting with some annoyance the growing predilection for stars to show up at film premieres in thematically appropriate fashions that often border on cosplay. With one cleverly executed and subtly delivered stroke, Carrie-Anne and the Oscar de la Renta team showed us how to show up to a franchise premiere sporting a corporate logo (more or less) and look every bit as high fashion and elegantly chic as a Vogue cover.

Let’s face it: It was designed to stand in front of that exact backdrop. Even so, it looks fantastic.
