“Single All the Way” Is the Kind of Gay Holiday Rom Com We Could Get Into

We’re not particularly fans of rom-coms. When a genre of film totally excludes any meaningful representation for you for decades, you tend not to have much of an attachment to it. And while the gays have been making hugely important inroads into this area (even Hallmark has at least one gay romance a season now), we still didn’t see much on the landscape that appealed to us. We wanted very much to love the Kristen Stewart and Dan Levy entry from last year, Happiest Season, but it turned out to be a little too dreary for us to get into, focusing largely on a dated “in the closet” storyline that felt too depressing for such light fare.

But we have to admit, this looks really cute:

Sure, the trailer pretty much gives the whole movie away but you can’t honestly have been expecting some sort of narrative twist, can you? The point with rom coms is not to wonder what’s going to happen but to enjoy yourself watching the inevitable unfold. It’s really hard to quantify these sorts of things, but this one actually feels like a gay story told by gay people. If nothing else, putting both Jennifer Coolidge and Kathy Najimy in your gay rom com is a signal that you know your audience.

Cute and fun. What more could you ask for from your Christmas romance movie?

Desperate to avoid his family’s judgment about his perpetual single status, Peter (Michael Urie) convinces his best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) to join him for the holidays and pretend that they’re now in a relationship. But when Peter’s mother (Kathy Najimy) sets him up on a blind date with her handsome trainer James (Luke Macfarlane)— the plan goes awry. SINGLE ALL THE WAY also stars Jennifer Coolidge, Barry Bostwick, and Jennifer Robertson.
