Posted on November 16, 2021

From a big Marvel break to major new music, it’s Hailee Steinfeld’s moment. The 24-year-old star is wrapping up the third and final season of Dickinson, about to embark on her highly anticipated journey as Kate Bishop in the upcoming Marvel series Hawkeye, and has new music coming out in 2022. For Cosmo’s December/January cover story, Hailee opens up to associate entertainment editor Emma Baty about her upcoming acting and music projects, dating life, dream musical collaborator (Ed Sheeran), and more. Hailee Steinfeld is coming out of her “sad girl” phase and ready to have some fun.

On her character, the titular poet Emily, in Dickinson: “It feels pretty amazing to be part of a show that makes people feel like they can fight against whatever box anybody is trying to put them in and to play a character who was so unapologetically herself during a time when being who you are was wildly unacceptable. There was one path that women were supposed to take, and she was running in the opposite direction. I just love that about her.”

On whether she knew right away that she’d get along with Hawkeye co-star Florence Pugh: “Oh, one hundred percent. I honestly felt that right away. And I hope to god she’d say the same thing. Jeez. Now that I say it, I’m like, ‘I knew right from the start!’ And what if she was like, ‘This girl?’ No, I think we just had similar energy…. We really did have a wonderful time together.”

On which ability she would rather have—Kate’s archery and fighting or Emily’s writing: “Oh my god. Emily’s writing because the fighting you can learn. That kind of writing is, I mean, literally just so hard to even comprehend. That’s a god-given, born-with ability that I would love to have.”

The December/January issue of Cosmopolitan featuring Hailee Steinfeld hits newsstands nationwide on November 23.
