Cathy Cambridge Takes On COP26

It’s all hands on deck week for the senior royals as Glasgow hosts COP26, the UN Conference on Climate Change. The Queen had to stay home on the advice of doctors, but climate change is a red-hot interest among the seniors, so Charles, Camilla, Kate and William have been out in force. No real reason to expect the Duchess of Cambridge to treat this like a fashion show, nor did she. We got a return to Sporty Cathy and a very workmanlike formal look.

Pretty sure she’d dress like this every single day on the job if she could. She certainly comes alive when she’s given the freedom to be informal. It’s cute how she showed up in her little Scout kerchief and wore the second one she was presented with that day.

This design is pretty dowdy to our eyes, but that doesn’t make it wrong for the venue. The glamour looks are for the Bond movie premieres, not UN events. A fashion critique here would be the wrong approach, we think. This feels like a slightly more formal version of the businesslike day looks (mostly pantsuits these days) she prefers. It’s all very “restrained royal” in a very Elizabethan (II) sort of way; serious and dignified, but with just enough touches to make her station apparent.
