We’ve mentioned this before but it bears repeating: We’ve been in the red carpet commentary game long enough that we can remember a time when events like the NAACP Image Awards, the BET Awards or the Latin Grammys were not places where you’d find a surplus of high-end, big-name luxury brands. The fact that we’ve only been at this game a little over a dozen years is fairly damning of the fashion world, but at least we can say we’ve been witness to this change. To be fair, they’ve always been stylish events, whether the big names were present or not, but entertainment events centering Black and other people of color are about as luxury brand and haute couture-heavy as any Golden Globes or Oscars red carpet now and we can assure you that was not the case until fairly recently. If you follow or care about this sort of thing, that can only be seen as a sign of progress. It matters when there’s an undeclared line separating who gets access to luxury promotional wear in the entertainment world.
Anyway, these are all just general musings, because Issa Rae has always served high fashion and there’s nothing new about seeing her looking spectacular in Prada.
