Red Carpet Classic Showdown: The Two Sides of Thandie Newton

Miss Thandie is on our minds today because she gave a barn-burner of an interview to E. Alex Jung for Vulture in which she did not hold back on the many stories she had to tell on her time in this industry. She’s been at the edges of our minds all spring and summer, actually. The third season of Westworld was so disappointing that we wound up binge-watching the first two seasons, just to remind us of what we loved about it. Turns out? It was all mostly Miss Thandie. Anyway, we wound up paging through our archives, musing on how she never failed to give us bold, discussable fashion choices (even if we didn’t always agree with them), when it dawned on us that in these content-light times, it behooves us to revisit some of our fave lewks of days gone by. In that vein, here’s what we picked when tasked with finding something fun and summery to look at and argue over for a few seconds. It beats thinking about anything else right now, right? Thandie, take us away.

We don’t much love side cutouts on dresses, but she can handle them fine and besides, the dress is so fun and visually interesting that they don’t even register. We’re probably a little too starved for fashion at the moment, but this feels joyous and chic at the same time. Yes, even the giant bedruffles.

We think the shape of this one – particularly the peplum and maybe the high neckline – make it a little more challenging, but it’s also what makes this ensemble so interesting. That and the killer print. Love the tight hair and focus-pulling earrings as well as the pink/orange eyeshadow (making her one of the few people we’ve seen to pull it off). Just a fun, chic, memorable look that very few others could pull off, we think.

Now, you could just enjoy this momentary reminder of the days when red carpets ruled our world or you could make a choice as to which one of these looks is the better, based entirely on criteria of your choosing. So which one’s it gonna be, hotshot?
