A “Parks and Recreation” Special

Posted on April 30, 2020

Sure! Okay!

Five years after audiences said goodbye to one of the most beloved comedies in TV history, the fine citizens of Pawnee, Ind., are reuniting for NBC and Universal Television’s all-original “A Parks and Recreation Special” set to air Thursday, April 30 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.

All of the original characters from the series will return in the 30-minute special, played by original cast members Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe, Jim O’Heir, and Retta. (In addition, several guest stars from the Pawnee universe may pop in.)

The story comes from the events of the day – Pawnee’s most dedicated civil servant, Leslie Knope, is determined to stay connected to her friends in a time of social distancing.

Not that we’re looking a gift horse in the mouth or anything. We loved Parks and Rec when it was on the air. We tend to think the rush toward comforting nostalgia during this time is perfectly understandable, but also not particularly entertaining. This isn’t a criticism because who the hell knows how to do mass entertainment in the middle of a mess like this one? Still, of all the reunions and Zoom-formatted shows offered lately, this is the only one that feels like it could be exactly right for this moment. Leslie Knope absolutely would become a Zoom addict and this is one cast that would probably have no problem with the format.

And like so much of our impromptu, on-the-fly entertainment lately, it’s for a good cause, raising funds for Feeding America to go to food banks around the country at this time. So it’s all good! We love and miss this cast, so we’re definitely tuning in.

But goodness, we wish all of these Zoom celebs would avail themselves of the expertise of the many makeup artists not currently working. We’re just saying. It’s stressful looking at all those shiny faces. They can walk you through a glow up, stars.
