2019 CMA Awards: Kacey Musgraves Serves Country Drag in Valentino

Part of the reason Miss Kacey has a sizable gay fanbase is because she’s the clear inheritor of the Country Glam style made so iconic by Dolly and Loretta and Crystal and Reba. No tea no shade against the Underwood, but modern country divas don’t tend to embrace the glorious tackiness inherent in classic CW stagewear as much as they used to.

That’s some sickening high-fashion Country Drag, y’all.

The funny thing is, modern high fashion embraced the tacky years ago, making it fairly easy for today’s country divas to indulge in the eye-popping levels of yesteryear while still looking au courant and chic by modern standards. In truth, this doesn’t really look like anything Loretta Lynn or Dolly Parton ever wore, but the boldness, sparkle, feathers and overall sense of LOUD GLAMOUR feels very much in the mode. The Crystal Gayle hair probably helps.

The other irony is that the dresses Loretta and quite a few other country divas were most known for – prairie style dresses – are easily the hottest trend in celebrity fashion, but you’re not likely to see them on a country music awards red carpet. Way too referential. This hits all the classic country diva sweet spots without looking like a retread.
