On the one hand, we look at Madge in a getup like this and think how exhausting it all looks. On the other hand, if we’re being fair and accurate about it, it was probably always exhausting in some way to be Madonna. It takes a lot of work to become an icon and change the culture.
And honestly? We don’t really hate this look for her. It plays with a lot of classic Madonna style tropes and includes more than a dash of classic Madonna pretension. After all, it takes some brass ones to walk around with “ART” emblazoned across your face. Even Gaga would be like, “Damn, girl.” It’s on brand, is what we’re trying to say. And it manages that while still being current fashion, even if the styling is old-school Madonna. The result is Steampunk Eighties Prom and well, that just somehow seems right for her.
