It’s the two most eye-popping looks of the week and the interesting thing is, one is entirely about the makeup and the other one is entirely about the dress.
T’s Pick: Lupita Nyong’o in Attico at the “US” London Premiere
T’s Defense: I STAN FOREVER. Admittedly, the dress is only okay. It’s nice enough, but the entire point of it is that it’s red and sparkly so it plays nicely with her Glam/Horror Chic thing. I also love that she’s indulging in the growing trend of ladystars dressing more for impact than to make you feel comfortable by looking conventionally pretty. And finally, I love that she’s doing the same thing she did when she was promoting Star Wars: The Force Awakens, using the genre tropes and styles normally not considered available to black actresses and repurposing them in fabulous new ways. Behold your new Scream Queen.
Lo’s Pick: Eva Green in Iris Van Herpen Couture at the “Dumbo” World Premiere
Lo’s Defense: X I do wish she had done a little more with the styling in order to meet the demands of such a stunning dress, but in the end, I can’t do anything but applaud the choice to wear it. It’s gorgeous, it’s perfect for a Disney film because it has a totally fantasy and slightly animated vibe to it, and I hope more actresses opt to wear a Van Herpen on the red carpet one they see how great it can look.
