Well, she sort of did what we asked. She toned down the Hollywood Glamour a little (sort of) and bumped up her Rocker Chick bona fides. When she threads that needle, she can manage some truly head-turning looks. But we never could have predicted where she’d take her inspiration from. If you asked us ahead of time, “T Lo, in your opinion, which Hollywood Legend is Gaga most likely to evoke on Oscar night?” We might have said Streisand or Garland or even Ciccone, if she wanted to be saucy about it. Never in a million years would we have predicted …

Audrey drag.

Literally:

“Audrey Hepburn last wore the Tiffany Diamond in a necklace for the Breakfast at Tiffany’s publicity photo shoot. The Tiffany Diamond, considered among the most important gemstone discoveries of the 19th century, was unearthed in 1877 in the Kimberley Mines of South Africa. Founder Charles Lewis Tiffany purchased the rough diamond the following year, solidifying the brand’s reputations as a diamond authority.”

Paired with a black gown (an unusual choice for the Oscars) and leather opera gloves (an even more unusual choice in this day and age), the look could not be more referential while managing to avoid looking like cosplay. After all, the dresses are very different, not to mention the wearers. It works for us; mainly because it pays tribute to her own excitement at becoming a real movie star while also having just enough of an edge to it so that it remains in the Gaga realm. The leather and the unusual silhouette give tiny nods toward edgier, more avant-garde fashion, the likes of which she’s worn throughout her career. It works because it’s unquestionably glamorous but also has a weight and seriousness to it that really plays into Gaga’s self-image at the moment. And the references, while so unmistakable as to be borderline too-obvious, are nonetheless thoughtfully updated and molded to her, showing a certain level of style sophistication and knowledge in the process.

We’d say she got this exactly right. And that necklace is a stunner.
