Brace yourselves, darlings. Your senses are about to be assaulted as we head into the nearly worst of the worst.

15: Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture at the “Red Sparrow” New York Premiere.

Jennifer and her team decided to go hard on the sexy for this promotional tour, and the results weren’t always pretty. In a press cycle that took some delight in noting her recent string of non-hits and at the height of the #TimesUp fervor sweeping the entertainment industry, it was a curiously tone-deaf sort of approach. Still, it might have worked if the lewks were up to par, but unforch, a lot of them looked forced and tryhard, mainly because sexy femme fatale really isn’t her bag. This was the worst of the lot, partially because of the unsuitability to her and the way it makes her so clearly uncomfortable, and partially because the fit in the bust is so awful it forced a nip slip.

14: Shailene Woodley in Ralph & Russo Couture at the 2018 Hollywood Film Awards.

If you blur your eyes, all you see are a bunch of circles floating over a pair of legs.

13: Katy Perry in Galia Lahav at QVC’s “FFANY Shoes On Sale” Gala – Time For Some Truth Bombs.

Katy, what’s that scent you’re wearing? It smells like … desperation.

If there’s a theme to this portion of the list, it may just be that all of these looks are trying so hard that they come off a little desperate. There’s one over-riding rule to good style that applies to everyone: don’t force yourself into something you’re not. Katy’s always been good with the cartoon fashion, but this is so stale and so badly suited to her. It has no charm but it’s trying so hard to charm us. It is the forced smile of red carpet looks.

12: Sarah Paulson in Calvin Klein at ELLE’s Women in Hollywood Celebration.

Tryhard or desperate are two words we’d never use to describe Miss Sarah, although this look comes awfully close to tempting us. We will chalk this up to her extremely admirable need to constantly push herself on the style front. She is a permanent resident on the cliffs of good style, where the fashion is always high and edgy. But the downside to being a constant risk-taker is the high number of risks that don’t pay off, not to mention the potential for the crash to be all that much harder. We’re using far too many words to avoid the main point: all of this, from tip to toe, is really bad.

11: Cate Blanchett in Derek Lam at the “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” L.A. Premiere.

We’re still clinging to our theory that she had something important to do that day and hired a Cate Blanchett impersonator to cover for her at this premiere.
