It’s not exactly interesting or revelatory to point out that a whole bunch of attendees wore black dresses to the Met Gala, since it will always be the standard go-to for any formal event. Fortunately, the Met Gala calls for an elevated approach to fashion, and very few of these frocks could be called “little” or “basic.”
Cara Delevingne in Ralph Lauren Collection

Quietly elegant and chic. We love how the sheer is used. We even think the turtleneck works with it, to our own surprise. She’s very well suited to it.
Charli XCX in Saint Laurent

Another use of sheer for which we have no problem. She never looked so chic or so glam. Everything is polished to a flawless level. While the gown is relatively simple for the Met Gala, the floral element is very pretty.
Cher in Burberry

QUEEN. Love the top, but the skirt looks like a total after-thought. She’d have been much better off in leather pants.
Emily Blunt in Ashi Studio

We love that she opted for pants, but we absolutely hate the design of the top. Tassels AND pearls? Girl, no.
Hoyeon in Louis Vuitton

Man, that garbage-bag peplum is a damn shame, because the dress would be insanely fabulous without it. As it is, its all we can see.
Julianne Moore in Bottega Veneta

We get that she, like several attendees, is doing a Madame X thing, and she looks very chic, but this feels a little low-key for the night.
Olivia Wilde in Thom Browne

Well that’s just dumb.
Rebecca Hall in Tom Ford

Love that top half for her. It’s got that chic/severe quality that works best for her. We’re just not feeling that skirt, which comes off like an afterthought.
Rosé in Saint Laurent

The dress is too simple and the bird element looks way too craftsy and out of proportion.
Zoë Kravitz in Saint Laurent

Loved this for her. We felt like she was referencing Goya or other Spanish Master paintings, but either way, it’s a great use of black lace and we love the slightly old world shape of it.
