Sabrina Carpenter came to the Met Gala in a very confusing look.

It’s our lot in life to be the tiresome queens who beat the drum every year, intoning over and over again, “The Met Gala is not a costume ball. The Met Gala is not a costume ball.” Despite the pushback we get on this point, we are firm in our stance that no one is required to dress according to the theme and if they just want to show up looking chic and fabulous, that’s just fine. But we have to admit, when we saw that Miss Sabrina showed up wrapped in film strips, with styling choices that pretty much scream “Old Hollywood.” And while you could stretch the theme of “Fashion as Art” to include the art of film, but it’s clearly a reference to museum art. Even more confusing, the headpiece is straight of the silent film era but the dress is made out of strips of the 1954 Audrey Hepburn movie, Sabrina. So it’s not on theme and even within the boundaries of the look itself, it tends to contradict its own aesthetic. AND YET… it’s one of our favorite looks of the night. It’s legitimately cute, genuinely interesting, and makes a fun little personal statement from her. We just hope she stayed away from any open flames. Then again, given the preponderance of feathers at this thing, all the candles are probably battery operated.
