Royal Tour 2018: Meghan Markle’s Love of Neutrals Pays Off in Emilia Wickstead, Altuzarra and Stella McCartney

Posted on October 20, 2018

If a Duchess’s work is never done, then we can haul ourselves out of bed on a Saturday morning to offer our opinions on her latest round of colorless ensembles for the Australian leg of the royal tour. We’ll be fairly nice this time. She had good reason to stick with her go-to black.

We’d say her preferences for neutral minimalism served her well here. It is, of course, perfectly appropriate for the setting. The short sleeves and discreet row of buttons give it just enough design interest to keep it from looking like a nun’s habit. She’s worn the hat before, but we like it much better with this dress.

Sporting a black Invictus Games shirt to a casual event left her with few options in terms of styling. We suppose she could have worn a colored blazer or blue jeans or white pumps, but we’re not sure styling up the shirt or trying to integrate into some sort of fashion-y look would make for good optics. She’s here to represent, and once again, her preference for colorless minimalism paid off this time. And the shades are nice, at least.

It’s fine. Whatever. It’s got that minimalist, navy blue drape-y/tailored thing she loves so much. We think her tendency to focus on one demure color at a time and wear it over and over and over again (like when she went through her pale pink phase post-wedding) is an almost aggressively dull way to approach one’s public style. We also think this practice is extremely deliberate and in this week’s podcast, we briefly talked in the first five or ten minutes about why she’s doing this and why we think she’s a bit mistaken in her thinking as to the role fashion plays in her new life. How’s THAT for a plug, darlings?
