At first, we thought we’d do this little rundown as a humorous example of the difference between British and American red carpets. Generally speaking, the Brits tend to feature WAY more quirky, edgy and attention-seeking fashion than the average New York or LA red carpet – which is really saying something, because Hollywood-based red carpets aren’t exactly known for their subtlety and shyness. But the premiere of Renegade Nell in London comes courtesy of Disney and a cast of Irish, American and British stars, so it’s not so easily categorized. And yet? Having done this for many years now, if you’d shown us these pictures and blacked out everyone’s faces and the background information, we would have taken one look at it all and immediately peg it British as fuck.
Alice Kremelberg in Simone Rocha
We mean, come ON. And she’s American, which is pretty funny. This is horrible, of course. We don’t know if that’s what she was going for, but considering how aggressive every element is, we tend to think that was the point.
Joely Richardson in Hermès
This is also, in its own way, extremely British in its approach. Loud and flashy, but also fun and quirky. Much like outerwear, knitwear and tweeds, the Brits do tacky with a bit more flair than anyone else. They can also pose with umbrellas better than anyone.
Louisa Harland in Christian Dior
This is chic. We realize that the sheer skirt is a twist on a classic look, but the differing weights of the textiles make it look a bit top-heavy.
Nicola Coughlan
Nicola’s not in the cast, but she was there to support her Derry Girls co-star Harland. This feels exactly like what it is: Nicola Coughlan taking the night off. It’s okay, but she usually puts way more effort in. The color isn’t great and that stitch holding the lapels together is a pretty glaring indication that she maybe should’ve worn a top under this one.
