John Slattery and Christina Hendricks in London

Posted on August 04, 2014

It’s so weird to see them like this. It’s like “Joan and Roger, the 2014 Edition.”

They’re busy in the city promoting their new film, “God’s Pocket.” Christina Hendricks is wearing a Temperley London Folk lace-paneled crepe jumpsuit accessorized with Karen Walker sunglasses and Kurt Geiger London ‘Britton’ pumps.

He looks good. The whole outfit’s working for him. The problem is the extreme wrinkling in the shirt, which makes it look like he napped in the limo or something. John, a little advice. If you can’t sit still and ramrod straight (as one should, when one is traveling somewhere where one’s picture will be taken) in your limo, then at least button the jacket when you get out of it.

She also looks good, which is surprising to us because if you said “black lace jumpsuit” to us, we’d respond with, “If such a thing absolutely must exist in the world, we can learn to accept it, but please, just keep it away from Christina Hendricks.” But the shape really works for her and she looks very relaxed and confidently chic. It’s got an appealing “real world” quality to it, if lace jumpsuits were something you saw in the real world on a regular basis.

He looks like he’d protect her in real life the way Roger does with Joan. Not condescending, but in a loving, respectful way.
Love what they’re wearing especially the look of both of them together. I hope there’s more to come.

    • I’m confused about that… he wasn’t averse to her prostitution, didn’t accompany her to her abortion appointment, doesn’t listen to her point of view now that she’s an executive, and married his secretary right under her nose. I think Roger’s kind of an ass to Joan.

      • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Roger’s kind of an ass, period. Lovable and funny, but still an ass.

      • altermyego

I see what you mean. I guess it was just my romanticized version of them. More like season one when he absolutely adored her.

      • stonecoldcuddlewhore

I think that it speaks to Slattery as an actor that his character is an ass who we should all hate….yet I still believe Roger loves her and just doesn’t know right from wrong / is a terribly rotten person wrapped in beautiful sterling wrapping paper. In other words, alter and I both seem to be inferring an awful lot from his performance vs what, as you pointed out, are his actions on paper.

    • SR93

I don’t mean this to sound ruder than it’s intended but where do you see that protection? He’s barely acknowledging her, which is fine but it’s not like he’s some savior.

    • Columbinia

Other way around, Joan keeps saving Roger.

  • Glam Dixie

Now see, I think the jumpsuit looks terrible on her and makes her look much bigger than she is. Uncles, it pains me that you like this.

    • MarissaLG

I think she looks great. Her waist looks slim and her legs looks super long. I think what you are seeing as “bigger than she really is” is actually “how she really is”.

      • Glam Dixie

Maybe so, maybe so, but I still don’t think it flatters her and I still can’t find it in myself to like it.

        • MarissaLG

You’re definitely allowed not to like it. If that wasn’t the case, this lovely website would hardly exist!

        • Leah Elzinga

I’m with you, actually. While I really like the bodice on her, I find the pants portion wholly unflattering. It’s like she’s got a foot and a half of crotch, and that’s just never cute.

          • livesarah

Yeah, it’s not her, it’s the damn jumpsuit. It’s always the damn jumpsuit.

        • largishbearishAtlish

Agreed…someone about the midriff is just not working for me (and the tops looks a bit snug for the girls). She looks wonderfully relaxed tho, but…I just can’t buy the outfit on her.

      • Yes, I appreciate that the pants actually look to be a comfortable fit on her, rather than pushing her into a size too small.

        • lizajane1776

The pants are wide enough, but the rise is too short. And the top is a touch too tight. Going up a size and having the pants hemmed would have brought it home for me.

      • sienna elm

So true. Remember that a huge part of the costuming is period shapewear…especially in the early seasons.

      • kimmeister

I think the shape is working for her, but the strikes against her are:
        1) still too snug in the bust
        2) fabric gets super wrinkly around her crotch

        • demidaemon

I think 1 is always going to be Christina’s Achilles Heel, so the fact that it doesn’t look overly snug is kind of a win for her. I do see the crotch issues everyone has pointed out, but I like it despite those problems.

    • I think the jumpsuit really needed that brooch or whatever it is that the model has on the waistline – it gives the illusion of a slightly lower waist, whereas on Christina having that high waist makes her look really short-bodied and blocky in the hips.

      • KinoEye

Not to mention the angle in the model’s photo — with the camera looking up like that, almost anyone’s legs are going to look like they go on for miles. It’s a great shot. I like this on Christina more than I thought I would, but the fit in the waist and hips is a problem.

    • BayTampaBay

      Agree with you Glam Dixie.

  • Gatto Nero

I know it’s irrational, but I love seeing them like this, as though one possible scenario of all the Roger-and-Joan speculation finally came true.
All that aside, I bet John and Christina have a warm and respectful professsional relationship, and they look quite sweet together.

  • Denise Rambo

I’m always surprised that he looks so much younger as John Slattery than he does as “Roger Sterling”. I sure hope Roger & Joan end up together by the end of the series.

  • Nikko Viquiera

    Meh. ’tis all right.

  • Anique Ashraf

Her hips are truly glorious. That jumpsuit is a beautiful silhouette on her.

    • Yes, I’m amazed how well that bodice works on her.

      • Anique Ashraf

From what little I can see, I think it’s masterful illusion lining. It can be done! The shade is slightly more yellow than her skintone but you have to really look at it to tell.

        • Grumpy Girl

OK, your young eyes are answering my question above, because I wasn’t seeing the lining, but I will take your word for it, if you see yellowing.

        • Good catch. I can see it now — it ends at the sleeves.

        • MilaXX

I think it’s illusion down the center, but sheer on the top & sleeves. If you look at the shot where her arm is (#5) you can clearly see her arm showing through. That’s why she’s wearing a strapless bra so the straps don’t show through the lace. On second glance the illusion appears to end at the shoulders and only the sleeves are sheer.

          • Anique Ashraf

Yeah it definitely ends at the sleeves — if you look hard enough (and I’m proper squinting now), the lining actually has a wider neckline than the lace. It’s really well done.

  • decormaven

Both appropriate on the street outfits. It’d be nice if the shirt were more pressed, but it will do. Missing Mad Men so hard right now. Damn split season….

    • sunnycalif

Looks like the seatbelt he was wearing wrinkled the shirt.

  • Grumpy Girl

Pockets are for carrying items–hands should be only in there if placing or retrieving said items. On him, having his hands in his pants pocket seems to be cause of the shirt shifting oddly. And for her, it makes the hip area look wider. I suspect, this is why for so long, designers avoided putting pockets in stuff, because so many people insist on using them like muffs. Why yes, I am feeling grumpy today . . .

    • MarissaLG

Wide hips be damned- I love having pockets and I leave my hands in there as long as I like.

    • MilaXX

I don’t mind garments with pockets but it seems like celebs, especially lady celebs can’t resist posing with their hands in said pockets which nearly always makes the clothes look dumb.

      • Grumpy Girl

Oh yeah, the pockets themselves are great. It’s the insistence on using them for hands that triggers my grump nerve. It messes with the garment line, increases wear and tear and detracts from the appearance. And I have to hear my mother’s voice in my head telling me that civilized ladies and gentlemen do NOT keep their hands in their pockets.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I’m going to give them both a pass because they aren’t posing for “real” photos. But when people are on the red carpet, I get mad when they have their hands stuffed in their pockets. Well, not mad – but judgey.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Right – she looks great in the jumpsuit. Who would have thought?? God, her smile is fabulous, isn’t it? She knows the whole world already wants to be her, or do her AND she’s on John Slattery’s arm to boot. I would be smiling just like that too, girl.

    • housefulofboys

I know! I want to be her…walking arm in arm with John Slattery.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

She looks fab. I do wish she had kept the small broach at the waist, like the model is wearing. Tho’ I guess if it actually is a broach, it might be uncomfortable to sit, with that metal jabbing you in the mid-section.

And John Slattery ~ standing naked in front of a window is my favorite look for him.

  • I covet her sunglasses.

  • In_Stitches

I can’t believe she’s pulling off that jumpsuit, but she is, and she’s doing it with chutzpa.

  • alyce1213

I agree about the jumpsuit. My first reaction was oh crap, I hate that thing . . . but damn she looks good in it! How can that be?

  • Kent Roby

Aw, it’s so fun to see them together. She looks great, but the model shot with the elongated legs is wacky.

    • Glam Dixie

It’s like that really stupid Project Runway challenge where they designed for girls on stilts. That one still baffles me.

      • Sarah

        So. Weird.

      • Kent Roby

Oh, Sweetie, don’t you know that any decent fashion designer should be able to make gorgeous fashion-forward pants for any normal person with 10-foot-long legs? It’s similar to the lessons we’ve learned from ANTM, like the fact that any real model should be able to work a greased runway blindfolded on stilts in a tsunami while heavy pendulums swing towards them, all at 20 stories off the ground. I’m pretty sure that’s how Christy Turlington got her start!

        • Glam Dixie

Haha, so very true! Where would the fashion world be without Tyra and Heidi to guide us?

          • Kent Roby

I wonder what ridiculous hell they’re putting the models through these days (if ANTM is still on at all). I hope they’re not setting them on fire or covering them with leeches.

          • Glam Dixie

There is just no telling, I had to give that show up years ago when it stopped being a guilty pleasure and turned into a really irritating hour of television. Project Runway is creeping closer and closer to that as well.

          • demidaemon

I still watch it, because, every once in a while (like PR), you do get a glimpse of the real deal on their. They hardly ever win, but it is nice to see them get exposure.

          • demidaemon

Oh, ANTM is still alive and kicking. They haven’t gone that far, but Tyra’s new kick is to put girls and guys together and see who can break the “no canoodling” part of the contract the fastest. Also, forcing uncomfortable boys into to posing in quasi-gay situations. Just affirms my theory that all supermodels are sadists.

  • FrauKrissie

She’s either braless or, based on the last photo, wearing an unsupportive strapless bra. It makes the girls ride too low and makes her look bulky. Some better support would free up her midsection and then she’d be rocking this.

    • Grumpy Girl

I would have thought she wasn’t petite enough to go braless, but I am confused, with this being lace panels, how the inner architecture is working. Because if it’s lined, it’s an amazing match to her skin and it seems like there would be seaming or something in the sleeve area. Is it a built in bra? (And I agree that a little more support would be better.)

      • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I don’t think it’s a built in. You can see that line over the tops of her breasts – it definitely looks like a strapless bra. BUT WHY, Christina, WHY?

      • MartyBellerMask

Bras are the best things ever AND the worst things ever, for a busty woman. I have enough problems, I can’t imagine the struggles Christina faces.

    • MilaXX

I see the strapless bra. I’m assuming it was so that the bra straps wouldn’t show though the lace.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I think there is illusion lining everywhere except the sleeves. Her skin tone has a definite pink to it, and that illusion, though pretty darn close, has a yellow tone.

But I think you’re right, and she’s wearing a strapless bra. I just don’t understand why, if the illusion would have covered her straps?

      • yllas

Illusion is see-through, is it not? straps would have shown anyway.

        • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Is it always? I’ve seen it where it’s quite opaque, but you could be right.

    • Mim McDonald

When you’re big, that’s where they sit. More volume means (usually) a bigger base, and that means they start filling out lower down the torso than smaller ones.

:-/ As a GG, I’ve had to get used to the idea that mine are going to look low because they start low…

  • Rrroza

I didnt realize that was a jumpsuit at first glance. That’s a nice trick!

  • MilaXX

They both look pretty good here. I like the jumpsuit on her. The lace hits her girly sweet spot without being to much frou frou on her upper body.

    • Anna

No bows in sight! Just for that reason alone, I call it a win.

  • Janet B

    The photos make me smile.

Except for the hands in the pockets, they look lovely.

  • Anna

Those shoes look like shiny torture devices. Love everything else though – especially the mini-fantasy that Joan and Roger could be a real couple. If only.

  • She’s beautiful as always. Those heels, though! I can’t believe they didn’t get stuck in a Belgian Block/cobblestone somewhere.

  • KT

They both look fabulous. I am also surprised by how well she’s pulling this off. LOVE her sunglasses.

I just love them so much!

  • Aidan B

Oh, bravo! Just seeing them together in real life makes me smile, plus they both look good. I too would never have predicted that jumpsuit would work for her.

  • Tanya Wade

This a a fan fiction paradise. The silver fox is, as always, perfection in these eyes.

  • Tricia

So cute I can’t handle it.

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Whenever I hear “Karen Walker sunglasses”, I think of Will and Grace. And then I wish *that* Karen Walker would make a line of sunglasses.

    • Tee

I wish *that* Karen Walker also had bags, shoes, skirts, martini glasses, hair pieces . . .

      • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Bras and panties. And the panties would be optional.

    • Qitkat

I want “that” Karen Walker to show up on “Grace Adler’s” new drama this fall, which I know nothing about except seeing promos of Debra in it.

  • Judy_J

It appears to me that the bodice is completely lined with a nude fabric, which would allow her to wear a bra and not have bra straps showing. She’s not showing any cleavage in the front, so there’s got to be lining, ’cause you KNOW she’s got cleavage! The sleeves are obviously not lined. She looks great, and I’m glad to see she left off the brooch at the waist. Mr. Slattery looks fabulous, as always. I agree with the Uncles, though….points off for the wrinkled chambray shirt. But that’s a minor quibble.

  • asherlev1

SHE LOOKS SO GOOD. Also, I ship it. /looks around shiftily/

  • boweryboy

John is perfecton. As well as Christina – from the neck up. Otherwise that jumpsuit is a big, fat no. It makes her look thick, but not in the “Damn, baby!” kind of way. Moreso the “Damn, what were you thinking?” kind of way.

  • Tracy_Flick

Can I get that top, without the wrinkly grandma pants attached?

  • bunkee

  • sunflower

I love Christina’s look from the waist up. I just wish it were a dress with a pencil skirt. But her hair and the sunglasses are fab!

  • MartyBellerMask

Christina, GIRL, we need to talk about your hair.

    • makeityourself

I was briefly afraid that her wig was going to fly off her head in that wind-blown shot.

  • Alison

I’m shocked that I don’t hate this on her. I just love her and want her to have nice things.
Also, I will never be able to see John Slattery and not think of Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, which, by the way, is HIGH-QUALITY CINEMA.

  • housefulofboys

With the terrible foot problems that she has, I don’t understand why she doesn’t search out some better choices for footwear that don’t involve pointy toes and heels. I can’t wear any kind of heel, but I can fake the illusion when I need to with a combination of platforms (NOT hoofs!) and wedges and a shape that looks streamlined without crunching my toes. Otherwise, she looks very nice here, I like her hair straight like this.

  • SistaT

Such a beautiful couple. I mean, of course they’re married to other people in real life and whatnot but they just look so wonderful side-by-side. And mrowr to Slattery. Just mrowr.

  • demidaemon

I actually liked the jumpsuit on her, too, which surprised me. I like the whole couple-y feel about the pics, too, despite knowing it is contrary to the actual situation.

  • evave2

It looks like a BLUE lace jumpsuit to me; is it the lighting on the street?

I think they both look good. And they know how to look like a couple.

  • rebeemoon

“Karen Walker sunglasses”? Are these named for one of my favorite TV characters? If so, great idea!

  • unbornfawn

His wrinkled shirt is really bugging me.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Now I want to go look for a bag in that color!

  • kim bunchalastnames

is that black? it looks navy to me.

  • Columbinia

Seeing Roger and Joan in 2014 is like seeing your third grade teacher in the grocery store.

  • E. D.

I think the waistline is too high on the jumpsuit.

  • NBG

I would not have thought that jumpsuit would work on her shape but damn she is pulling it off. Snaps of respect.

  • Imasewsure

Love the top part of the jumpsuit on her, even the slightly odd sleeve treatment – but that’s all I love about it. Not bad but not great… Also very wiggy again… oh well…

  • I want them to get married and have a million babies.

Why yes, I do have problems projecting my desires for fictional characters on the actors who portray them.

  • Michelle Lim

Don’t you almost wish they were a couple in real life? They look great together. And John Slattery’s got to be the best silver fox by far. Until Jon Hamm starts to grey, then all bets are off.

  • It just dawned on me that John is exactly Dan Humphrey in 50 years.

P.S. Does she have a new stylist? Things are greatly improved!

  • e jerry powell

I am happy in my happy place.

  • princesstylewars

    Love them.
