Marion Cotillard at the Christian Dior Fall 2014 Couture Show

Posted on July 08, 2014

Oh, so that’s how it is, is it? The American ladystars and the English ladystars, they get the CRAP dresses to wear to the Dior show, but little Miss France over here, she gets the chicest look of the lot?

Actually? We have no problem with that. Especially when she winds up looking so good that she inspires some epic side-eye jealousy.

    • Supernumerary

After all the hideous things Dior has put that woman in, she’s owed something nice.

      • AlexisPayne

Seriously, after a dress that looks like a condom and one that looked like it had “the disembodied heads of crying little Catholic girls” I think she’s allowed to the chicest look. That smug face says it all.

      • SophieB210

Exactly, she’s worn more than her share of crap Dior this spring. And it’s not that chic, it just looks better in comparison to the other two.

      • Sophie

I’m sure she sent her stylist over as soon as possible to get the best/only dress worth wearing. When the others arrived, they could only try to limit the damage – I’d say Emma Watson’s stylist arrived after Jennifer Lawrence’s.

      • livesarah

Yup, I was going to say, this is Dior’s apology to Marion for everything they’ve done to her over the past couple years… It’s not even that great, just a refreshing break from the extreme fug they’ve been forcing her into.

      • demidaemon

        My exact thoughts!

    • pattyw

Side eye OR “Harrumph. I’m dressed better than all the Dior spokeswomen combined!”

      • Bad Idea Jeans

That’s what it looked like to me, too. Side-sneer. I don’t think this dress is that much better than Jennifer Lawrence’s, and it kind of seems like it is wearing her.

        • Rhonda Shore

Agree, while it’s better than the others, it’s no great shakes either.

          • d4divine

            The fit is flawless though.

            • scoobynacks

As long as she doesn’t so much as get a little gassy. One burp and it is all over with the seam at her waist. I’m not sure how she sat down.

            • d4divine

She’s French, I’m sure she made it work 😉

            • LesYeuxHiboux

French women don’t eat, it’s why they are so sharp-tongued. Du vin, des cigarettes, et voilà!

    • James

I am just going to sit here and stare. Yes. Gorgeous.

    • RussellH88

This is so French I can smell the baguettes from here.

    • Anna

It’s chic compared to the other Dior catastrophes, but it looks like she left the bistro with a dinner napkin stuck to her blouse.

      • H2olovngrl

I was also thinking the same. Damning with faint praise somewhere along the lines of, well it’s better than the others but still not so good. Ummm…S’ OK? No matter what, you put it much better than I and your critique was most on point.

        • Anna

The bar has been set THAT low for Dior.

Without the superfluous black (and polyester-looking) fabric, and perhaps a belt, I think I’d like it very much. I wish I could see more of the print, and you can on the model. It’s more obstructed on Marion, adding to the dinner napkin effect.

          • demidaemon

I know. And yet, over in the other thread, there are some serious Dior supporters singing their praises. I received a reply to one of my comments stating all the dresses that were good and decided, “You know what? I am going to walk away from this before I burst a blood vessel.”

            • bitchybitchybitchy

This dress is basically a little black dress with just a bit of patterned fabric inserted. Even Raf Simons can’t completely screw up a LBD-so, yes, I will damn him with that faint bit of praise.

            • demidaemon

You can tell he gave it his best shot though. *SLOW CLAP*

            • bitchybitchybitchy

              VERY SLOW CLAP

            • CelandineM

Well fashion is so subjective and it’s a good thing that there is something for everyone, however, I also think Dior has been a parade of crap for quite a while now. I wholeheartedly agree with your comments on other threads.

            • demidaemon

It is good to know I am not alone.

        • 3boysful

Me, too! I am not loving any of the “artfully-draped/not really fitted” napkin bodices.

      • gloriana232

Yeah … it looks pretty terrible. She’s standing like she’s afraid to move at all, because it’d reveal how truly goofy-looking her outfit is.

      • asherlev1

Seriously. Not to mention that Marion has been ruminating in Dior purgatory for longer than JLaw. She deserves a break.

        • Anna

Or a new contract. With a different designer!

          • asherlev1

Let our prayers be one day answered.

      • Alicia

I was thinking she’s just put a baby down and forgot about the burp cloth.

        • Anna

Ha, didn’t even think of that, but you’re right!

      • TippiH

yes, napkin…but I was thinking mudflap

    • jspark

Bag should have been on the other shoulder.

    • Thomas

Emma was probably giving Marion the stink eye the whole show. I would sue if I were her.

    • frannyprof

“Kiss my chic french derriere, les bitches!”

    • Jennifer Bober

The smirk on her face says she knows it too.

    • hughman

Please tell me Bianca Jagger is wearing the white suit in the row behind her and googling to find out the name of this young lady.

      • plumblossom

If you are talking about the young lady side-eying Marion in the penultimate photo, she’s French actress Louise Bourgoin.

      • lexilexi

Yes – I think it is Bianca.

      • EveEve

Yes, that’s her Sixty-nine year old Bianca, FTW.

        • Introspective

did you see the images of her outfit full length as she was walking in?? Bianca OWNED it. 69 better have me looking that fab…

        • formerlyAnon

Yup. AND she looked chic while looking every year of her 69. None of this, “oh, I’m aging so gracefully (due to the fact that my surgical assistance is subtle and only knocks 10-15 years off my face.”) NO Ma’am. Straight up “I’m 69 and smoked for years. And I’m owning it now.”

      • Jeremiah Capacillo

    • LaMamanduPoeteetSainte

The difference I think, dear uncles, is that this is a grown woman who knows/owns her style as opposed to two young ladies who were probably fawning at the fact that this is Dior.

      • Thomas

I think Emma Watson is pretty stylish and chic. She probably was just forced to wear that “dress.”

        • scoobynacks

Charlize on the other hand knows better than to wear that gold thing and did it anyway. And with those shoes. Ugh.

    • FibonacciSequins

That side eye is so appropriate, given what we’ve seen today.

Good for Marion, though. She got the best of a bad lot, and she’s making the best of it.

      • Carleenml

yes. “chicest of the lot” – not saying much.

    • smh4748

Beautiful. Some earrings would be welcome, but she looks very pretty. She even got good makeup and hair! I wonder if it’s difficult to know that you look SO much better than everyone else there–probably not very. :)

    • RescueMe23

I’m sorry I don’t see it. If someone on PR sent that down the runway everyone’s claws would be out. A falling down bib with a modified mullet skirt – gurl please!

    • Wink

This is the chicest look of the lot. That’s just sad.

    • Latin Buddy

TLo, time for me to fess up. Everytime I click on a post that shows someone wearing Dior, I desperately hope that you guys FINALLY provide your own definitive assessment of Dior-via-Raf Simons. It’s like that one time you guys overheard an editor say they didn’t get Rodarte. I want you guys to validate my own feeling and say, Dior isn’t chic and it’s like a decoy Project Runway collection.

      • demidaemon

Not only is it like a decoy PR collection, it is like Suede’s decoy PR collection.

    • Ganoc

Side eye, in all fairness, is Freakin’ Gorgeous.

      • Theda

I’m almost sure that’s Louise Bourgoin, another French actress.

        • Ganoc

          Thank you for the knowledge!

    • MilaXX

She’s earned this considering that last few WTF Dior frocks she’s worn recently.

    • Alyssa

That smirk is because she just saw what they put JLaw in. I love the side-eye picture.

    • OffToSeeHim

She knows it too. Look at that smug French smile. I love it, she looks fantastic and she owns it!

    • teensmom99

Here’s the deal: while every one else was at the beach, she grabbed the nicest dress and had someone do her hair.

    • Boulderista

After seeing all the other dior dresses from the back I wonder what the back of this one looks like …. nonexistent? unzipped?

    • AC Simons

Bianca Jagger looks good. As for Ms.Cotillard, the look is good, but I don’t really like the shoes. They look too heavy and don’t fit well.

      • kimmeister

Ew, I just noticed the red at the tippy-tips of the shoes. Weird.

    • brown-eyed girl

I’ve got it! They all look like bridesmaids!

      • demidaemon

So, therefore, Raf Simons is the bride and he has saved the best dress for himself to wear to the event?

    • Clash D

I don’t like it. It looks like something that’s being worn inside out.

    • anneshirley

meh. It’s only good by comparison to the others. Also, the chain-strap purse is wrong with this look – competes with the shoulder detail.

    • SewingSiren

Très chic. And she deserves it.

    • NMMagpie

That side eye in the fifth image says it all: I wanna look like YOU.

    • Danielle

Look at that salty-ass side eye in the second to last picture. That girl needs some tequila and a lime!

      • Shawn EH

This girl could use some of that too!

    • msdamselfly

Marion could make a dish towel look chic.

    • Loramir

Actually I think Zhang Ziyi got by far the best dress of the bunch. Pretty sure that’s her sitting between Marion and Side-Eye Girl, but hidden behind Marion. Marion’s is “eh, not as bad as it could be,” while Ziyi’s is actually drool-inducingly gorgeous. (The Fug Girls posted it yesterday.) Marion’s still just looks…awkward, like she draped a black cloth napkin over her blouse during dinner and forgot and left it there.

    • PinkyK

Ha! Look at the 5th picture. The girl on the left behind her…. That face says it all!

    • marlie

Not bad. Though I didn’t mind JLaw’s dress from earlier today. It’s almost like this is the black version of what JLaw had on.

      • kimmeister

But the super high waisted skirt is working better on Marion’s proportions. I would love to own that skirt.

    • Lisalady161

      SO much stink-eye.

    • ecallaw1977

      Still kind of ugly.

      • Shawn EH

It’s like she’s wearing a black napkin … funereal banquet?

    • d4divine

I feel that side-eye hate coming through my computer!

    • kimmeister

The print part of the top is totally wasted when you pair it with such a high-waisted skirt though. I like the top and the skirt but not necessarily together.

    • Call me Bee

Wow–that pic of Miss Marion standing at her chair has all sorts of sh*t going on! The side-eyed model, the sunglass wearing couple behind her, the man trying to get a phone picture, the many heads turned back to the entrance…. I love that photo. Oh–yeah. The dress is nice.

    • Cele Deemer

      I love that dress!

    • PastryGoddess

I was more interested in that maybe sighting of Bianca Jagger behind her

    • CKMia

    • nannypoo

She has worn so many crappy things lately. This is beautiful.

    • evave2

Agree about the dress; also I think it looks better with the low heel.

    • KT

That side-eye is giving me LIFE! Hahaha.

This is a great little look, though the patterned fabric that’s peeping out from under the black section of the blouse is seriously making my eyes twitch. It looks like her shirt isn’t fastened correctly or something. But otherwise great and very flattering, especially the skirt.

    • Monabel

      Not that good.

    • Laylalola

I think she’s just one of the most beautiful women in the world.

    • Qitkat

Classic MC perfection. And she knows it.

I really like the unusual symmetry of the hemline. Although she is not short (5’7″), it gives a model-tall illusion of longer legs.
And is that a Chanel bag she is hiding from the camera?

    • Guy Young

I love Bianca Jagger in the background.

    • Diane Iafrate

      That side-eyed jealousy is epic.

    • Anique Ashraf

this being downright chic begs the question: what happened to you, Dior?

    • andi56

That’s because she can wear it with une élégance that the others clearly lack. Très simple! : )

    • quiltrx

Well, we now know who won the annual “before the Dior show catfight.”

    • demidaemon

For all the shit Dior has put her through lately, I think Marion deserved this. So get it, girl.

    • Frank Lithium

The stink-eye the lady in the second-last picture is giving to Ms. Cotillard is hilarious. Great presentation btw.

    • eclare

Isn’t this practically the same outfit that Jennifer Lawrence wore, just in black and with more weirdness going on in the blouse?

    • Tami from Seattle

      Love the shoes!

    • formerlyAnon

It would have been chic-er without the mini-mullet. IMO.

    • Beto

FIRST outfit that she actually rocks. Why she was sporting those ugly Dior things the past couple of months… I can’t explain it. I know she have a contract with Dior but at the least they should make her looks decent. This one is the first in their efforts.
