One of our complaints/observations (we can’t decide which) regarding the 2024 Met Gala is that there was a distinct sense of scaling back on the theatricality. We are somewhat leaning toward the idea that it would be a good thing for the Gala to have a reset and get itself back to the night of high fashion it once was, instead of the night of celebrity viral moments it has become. On the other hand, that celebrity theatricality is what turned the Met Gala from a semi-sober socialite gathering to the ultimate red carpet event in the world, bringing immeasurable PR value to the Met itself. We go back and forth on this and we’ll probably wind up debating it in the next podcast. All we know is that this brand of costumery felt out of step this year. But even if we fully embrace the idea that the stars are there to put on a clown show, this is just an ugly as hell design. The textile is too close to her skin tone and not utilized in a way that would make it a sexy sheer dress. Instead it’s all wrinkled and puckered to hell, with muddy-looking flowers tacked on or shoved into it. The hem and the headpiece are jokes. We realize she’s having a whole bunch of PR issues herself at the moment, which is why this whole appearance feels like a mistake. She’s a mess and she looks low-rent. This design is a disaster for her.
