In this, The Summer Henceforth To Be Known As The Summer When The Stars Ran Screaming From Color (or TSHTBKATSWTSRSFC, for short) Miss Lizzy springs a scrolldown surprise on us.

BAM. Pops of color, bitchez!

Aaaaannnnd this is why we’ve pulled back a bit from overusing the “This could use a pop of color” line. Lately it seems to be getting deployed in ways that distract from the look. We’d have been fine with the royal blue pumps (which seems to be the trend these last few weeks, as if the yellow pump micro-trend has already died off), but the bright pink AND the blue render the look a little unbalanced. Actually, strike that. VERY unbalanced. If we were being perfectly bitchy about it (instead of the imperfect bitchiness you’re getting), we’d say this was a look put together for a gal who doesn’t want anyone looking at her face.

But y’know? We just realized that she’s wearing separates here. And since we’re not supercrazy about how that top fits her, we think you could correct things quite easily by getting rid of it and wearing something that would pull the whole look together. Of course we don’t quite know what she should be wearing in its place, but we’re thinking and all-white top might actually be better. Your eye won’t be so easily pulled away from her face and she gets to keep the pops of color.

And speaking of faces, she’s got a great one, but we’re not sure it’s being set off. We’re okay with the makeup (although there’s some sort of weird streak or shadow on the right side of her face), but that hair is not helping to elevate the look.

Anyone catching S2 of Masters of Sex? We’re on the fence. T never finished S1 (Lo did) and Lo isn’t sure if he’s enticed enough to pick it up again. It’s a great cast and the show looks good (although not as good as Mad Men did in its earlier seasons), but the two leads don’t really have any chemistry with each other and the whole story hangs on the idea that they do.

I think a sleeveless all white top and black pumps and I’d be more on board.

    • I’m with you here, Jessica. The dress would gain a good deal by losing the sleeves. And she could ahve rocked a pair of purple shoes and I’d have been good with that.

      • GSMSF

Plus, it’s downright distracting to see someone dressed in long sleeves in July.

  • Jennifer Bober

Could someone please teach the ladystars that not all blacks match? These have different overtones in the color and it’s making me twitch.

Definitely all white top and a black or white shoe.

    • MarieLD

I think the skirt is navy, not black (at least on my screen). which kind of makes it worse.

      • BLauDGaspode

I’m getting a navy look from it too.

        • Anna

Glad it’s not just me, it was driving me crazy trying to decide if it was mis-matched blacks or navy, but I think it’s navy. Or maybe it’s mis-matched blacks…need more espresso now.

          • BLauDGaspode

Hmm. I haven’t had my coffee yet. Off to fix that and look again, but either way, these pieces are not working.

      • conniemd

The belt definitely has navy hues, there’s not enough black in the skirt to tell for sure.

      • Fitzperry

I agree. Definitely looks navy on my carefully calibrated screen.

        • I didn’t know you *could* calibrate a screen!

    • MilaXX

I’m getting competing shades of dark blue on my monitor which is why introducing that royal blue shoe bugs.

  • Little_Olive

Hm. The blue pump is not great, but it doesn’t bother me that much either. It’s the hair and makeup from the night before that have me wincing at this.

    • conniemd

Exactly, she looks like she rolled out of bed still wearing yesterday’s make up and threw on the clothes and out the door.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I hate that hair. And that skirt. And the top, to be honest- who wears long sleeves in this weather?
But Masters of Sex is the JOINT. I love that show. I saw the first episode last week, and I have to say, it looks like they’re doing a bit more to show why it makes sense that they felt connected to each other.

  • Janet B

She needs a simple white (or black) Summer top, better hair and better makeup.
A black sandal would be nice too.

eta: I could have just said I like the skirt!

  • BLauDGaspode

Considering it’s for a show called “Masters of Sex”, she is drowning in too much fabric. This looks like an outfit pulled from mom’s closet by a little girl playing dress-up.

    • Kent Roby

I love the idea of going opposite in appearances to emphasize the fact that you are acting in the role (like dressing sexy on the RC if you play a stern nun with no make-up, or being prim and proper if you’re naked in the project), but this look is just unsuccessful.

      • BLauDGaspode

I agree. You don’t want to wear your costume on the rc, but this strikes me as bed sheets pulled on instead of covered up. I actually don’t know this show or her role, but this is a miss for lots of reasons.

        • Kent Roby

I haven’t seen it (it’s about Masters and Johnson, she plays Virginia Johnson), but some BKs really like it. Masters is played by Michael Sheen, who is a really terrific actor, so I shall henceforth look for it on Netflix and Amazon.

  • Sophie

The hair and make-up don’t appeal to me, so I much prefer to look to the pink stripe and the blue shoes and the big cocktail ring on the way down. Much more interesting.

    • Rhonda Shore

There’s something wrong with what they’re doing to her eyebrows, they are nice to begin with but the fill-in they’re doing is changing her entire facial expression.

  • Anna

I dunno what would make this better for me, I’m getting a corporate banquet in 1986 impression from this. I think it’s the hot pink and blue satin combo. I love the ring though.

    • decormaven

That ring is gorgeous, although it looks a bit big for the finger. May be way she has it displayed.

      • Anna

You’re right, she should take it off immediately and donate it to the Bitter Kittens!

        • KinoEye

A tax-deductible donation in the name of charity, since we can’t all afford to have such fabulous rings. And everyone should have a fabulous ring like that one. It would be Lizzy’s good deed for the day.

          • Anna

I know, we’ll have to arrange some sort of timeshare amongst ourselves, but I’m confident the BKs could make it work!

  • mjude

what is with the long sleeves? I cant

    • kimmeister

The long sleeves are in a lightweight fabric though. I think a long sleeved lightweight top is much cooler than a thick sleeveless top.

  • I feel like the skirt is twisted, if she got that navy panel 2″ closer to her hip it’d sit better. But it really does need a simple shell top, either navy or white, and lighter-handed makeup.

    • MoHub

I’m having trouble with the whole way the color blocking is done. Geometric effects can be cool, but the geometry has to tip its hat to the shape of the wearer’s body, and this skirt does not. It looks twisted and awkward.

      • Grumpy Girl

That is a great way to express the problem many designers have with color blocking and geometric designs.

  • teensmom99

Fit! It shouldn’t be hard if you’re a stylist.

  • Kitten Mittons

Love that skirt! Definitely needs a sleeveless top, if only to be more summery. It’s all too heavy for July.

Same complaint with the shoes. If these were blue sandals/strappy heels, I’d be pleased. The pumps look too heavy.

  • bassfemme

Kinda OT, what is the “E” supposed to be? A nude front bottom? A thonged back bottom? Cleavage of some sort?

    • MoHub

I’d go with your first guess. I’m seeing a front view of the good china.

    • Kent Roby

It reads as cleavage to me. Decolletage.

      • Gatto Nero

Yes; I think that’s the point!

    • MilaXX

      I think it’s a bed maybe?

    • Paigealicious

I’m seeing cleavage, although you could also say that maybe the “E” itself is lying on its back with its legs in the air?

    • suzq

OT? This is the best thread of the post!

    • Gatto Nero

It’s just abstract enough (intentionally, I think) to suggest several things to the viewer — all of them anatomical/sexual.

  • sienna elm

The shoes look bridesmaid-y. 🙁 The ‘white’ in the top is more of a cream and clashes against the skirt. It’s all a mess, but I do like the skirt.

  • mshesterp

It seems like WAY too much fabric and the top and bottom don’t match and the skirt is too long. Oh, Lizzy. A few tweaks here and there and it would’ve been funky and modern. Almost–not quite.

I LOVE MoS and think the two leads have mad chemistry. Loved the Season 2 premiere, too. I’m very invested in the characters, including the minor characters, and how they’ll translate the story from real life to tv, especially when the real story of Masters and Johnson getting together isn’t the romantic fairy tale people want it to be. It was one of my favorite shows last year and I bet that will be the case this season.

    • gabbilevy

Agree. Really enjoyed the first season and thought the premiere, especially the work from Allison Janney and Beau Bridges (but also from Lizzy and Michael Sheen), was outstanding.

  • Alyssa

I agree that an all-white top would be better. The black top against the navy in the skirt is making me twitchy.

  • Jarethee

I can’t grasp a heavy skirt in the summer, especially one that looks as cumbersome as that one. Cut the skirt in half and get rid of the sleeves and…nope, still not good. Try again.

  • Kent Roby

That pink/blue combo has the same jarring effect as that purple/lime outfit Whoopi wore to the Oscars a hundred years ago.

  • RescueMe23

I disagree about the makeup – I think she looks like a washed-out Morticia Adams.

  • Carleenml

I barely made it through season 1 and can’t think of a reason to bother with season 2. I DO love her, though. I think she’s got a great presence on the screen. Not loving her hair here…so cute shorter.

  • evave2

The pink and the blue REALLY clash. Too much material for summer. I agree a shell would’ve been better.

  • Grumpy Girl

I vote for a soft updo, more summery makeup (with her lovely eyebrows, she needs to work at “summer” looks, I think), a white or other jewel-tone (NOT that hot pink, but it could be something else) sleeveless top, and a great long necklace. And hem the damn skirt.

  • joancarol

It looks like an anatomy lesson.

  • MissusBee

Sister wives go mod. Let’s hope their strictures accommodate a good anti-perspirant.

  • cocohall

I have to give it to her – at first I thought, wow, she looks striking. The individual pieces are really lovely. It just doesn’t quite hang together. The hair says lazy Sunday at home with the papers; the shoes say Saturday night and I’m up to get lucky. And the dress says MOMA charity event. All of these references could be strung together into a little story, but it is hard to get them all into one look.

I have not watched the show. I saw the two leads pitching it on the View when it first came out and there was zero chemistry or humor on display. It just seemed like a visit to the gyno circa 1953. And who needs THAT?

  • Danielle

I almost fell over at the blue shoes. I finished S1 and have yet to start S2 because my husband won’t watch it so I have to find time to myself, and my mom totally spoiled it by telling me they got married IRL. I really love the 50s sets though.

  • Starts with K

I’m in the minority here in that I love the pops of color, and love the color choices. HOWEVER, I think they need a little distance from each other. Shorten the skirt to midi length (I think this is an instance where the usually-awkward midi length would really work) and chop the sleeves off the top and this look would shine. The asymmetry of the top plays well with the skirt.

  • MilaXX

HATE those bridesmiad looking shoes. I’d swap that top for a white short sleeved or sleeveless top and go for a shoe the same color as the navy in the skirt. The pink trim is enough of a color pop. If you want more, then add it to the ring or the earrings. I’m in the minority as having never watched Masters of Sex. I keep seeing people raving about it, but it just never moved me to make room in my tv schedule.

  • LibKat

Good God, you’re wearing evening clothes. Do something with your hair!

I finished season 1 of MoS, but will not go back. Really didn’t like the characters, except Alison Janney, and I don’t see the point in spending an hour a week with people I don’t like.

  • rhymeswithspoons

Genuinely surprised (and dismayed) that you two aren’t down with MoS! It makes me kind of sad, like sets of friends whom I absolutely adore all around but who don’t get along. And your reasoning, ouch! I pick up on nothing *but* chemistry between Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan. Give season 1 another go; episode 5 is where things really pick up. Episode 3 of season 2 is supposed to focus more on Bill’s past and what makes him tick, and even though it’s still two weeks away, I’m looking forward to Sheen’s performance.

  • I really like MoS. Lizzy (Virginia) and Martin (Dr. Masters) have great chemistry. It’s not smoldering but there’s chemistry and it’s believable. I mean, if they didn’t have any ounce of chemistry I don’t think the show would be having the buzz it’s having and still having.

Back to Lizzy, I agree with only having the shoe be the pop of color.

    • Danielle

Agree with you on the chemistry. It’s there, but not overwhelming.

  • Gatto Nero

I was on the fence about returning for season 2, but decided to give it another shot. The dialogue can be so stilted, and although Michael Sheen plays the hell out of a weirdly written character (and I love Beau Bridges and especially Alison Janney in their roles), Lizzy strikes me as overly mannered and self-conscious in a way that is off-putting and unconvincing. I’m not sure whether the part is written that way to convey her character’s defensiveness or whether this is just a function of her limitations as an actor.
That said, I agree with TLo about the color, the top, the makeup and her hair.

    • Qitkat

I haven’t looked at season 2 yet, but I enjoyed the hell out of season 1, with my favorite characters being the ones played by Beau and Alison. I don’t think there is no chemistry between the leads but your characterizations of weirdly written and overly mannered are spot on.

As for this look, my hair looks exactly like hers right now, and I haven’t washed or brushed it yet today, so that is no compliment. The pink pop of color is nice, but having gone once again to the wintery well of heaviness in the height of summer, doesn’t play well, and what is a stylist thinking with the bright blue shoes? I’m thinking pewter may have worked here, along with ripping off the sleeves.

    • suzq

Beau is up for an Emmy and I’m going to throw objects at the TV if he doesn’t win. Alison is mesmerizing always.

  • I actually love this hair in her-Bachelorette-character kind of way. Do agree the skirt reads navy, but the shoe is okay by me. The top and some earrings are what I would change. Btw, LOVED S2 Episode 1. There is chemistry, and lots of mental shit with Dr. Masters. Lizzie is a mighty fine actor.

  • Denise Rambo

This is another case of the actress not looking nearly as good as the character she portrays (another is January Jones/Betty Draper). The hair is HORRIBLE! I would NEVER go out of my house without brushing my hair first. PLUS … hasn’t anyone told these people that it’s JULY? Why all the long sleeves? AND … you’re absolutely right about Lizzie Caplan and Michael Sheen having zero chemistry. I almost decided to give up on MOS because Michael Sheen just creeps me out.

    • suzq

She has a professional hair stylist. I know the name, but I won’t reveal it here. “Messy hair” is the style now. That’s why you see it so much on the red carpet. It drives me crazy, too. I can get those same results at home without paying someone. Maybe the products they use smell fantastic.

Michael Sheen is SUPPOSED to creep you out! What irks me is that he looks nothing like the real Bill Masters!

  • Mothra

that’s an awful lot of eye make up for someone who doesn’t seem to own a hairbrush.

  • Scott Cooper

The problem with look isn’t the pop of two colors at the bottom. It’s unbalanced because her hair isn’t finished. Her hair really needs a bit more edge. Her make up needs a bit more definition. This is one time when she looks like she ran in from the mall and threw on the outfit she’d been planning for weeks and had hanging on the back of her bedroom door. Give her a big, fabulous blow out and some color on her lips and this would be a winner.

  • IF this FIT …it may have been ok… as is… it’s a mess.

  • Dino Bonačić

Should have worn a loose black or pink cami with an updo and would look smashing!

  • CT14

I hate the raccoon ring around her eyes.

Stop it with entirely lining the eyes already! It barely works on teens, and ages anyone older by a decade.

  • FibonacciSequins

I like Lizzy so much, but I don’t like anything about this. The makeup would be fine with a less glammy evening look, and her hair is a mess. We won’t speak of her outfit.

  • smayper

Beautiful talented lady. Terrible outfit. Especially hard to see because she is IMO perfectly costumed in MoS, and looks great.

  • yethica

The pronunciation of the acronym: tish-bee-cats-wit-sris-fuk. TSHTBKATSWTSRSFC

    • Qitkat

I’ve got to be down with anything that has ‘KAT’ in it!

  • judybrowni

Oh puhleeze cover MS2, our Lizzy looks so much b etter there.

  • marlie

I’m not feeling the dress. I don’t like the long sleeves, so a different top could have made a big difference. The hot pink and the royal blue aren’t working together for me. Also, her hairdo makes me sad. That’s a wash and air-dry look. Her makeup is pretty though.

  • demidaemon

I’m not feeling this at all. It just isn’t working, and I don’t love any of the pieces.

  • suzq

    1. Her eyes are WAY WAY overdone. She does not need the raccoon liner all the way around. (Dammit…I know her make-up artist and I broke my recusing rule! But I feel strongly about this!!!)

    2. Satin does no one any favors unless the fit is impeccable. The bunching up along the waist is distracting. A sheath dress with this graphic treatment would have been better than separates.

    3. As for MoS, the lack of chemistry between Virginia and Bill doesn’t bother me. Not all relationships have chemistry as we understand it. In real life, Bill’s proposition was sexual harassment, through and through. Virginia was never in love with him and later regretted marrying him, decades later. He left her in the end for an old flame from before he was married the first time. She died pretty bitter about it. It’s a smart show about the price of sexuality, within marriage and outside of it. Beau Bridges portrayal of Barton Scully is outstanding. He should win an Emmy, if not for season 1, certainly for season 2.

  • KT

I mostly love this. The skirt is FAB and suits her perfectly. The shoes don’t bother me, but they could have been much better. Same goes for the top — and the more I look at it, the more the black + dark navy combo is making my eyes twitch. I agree that she could have found a much better top to pull this all together. I think either a white or a navy top in the same shade as the navy in the skirt would work nicely.

It’s a high impact look that’s beautiful and striking at first, and then becomes decidedly less so the longer you look at it. Still, mostly good, and points for being interesting.

  • Man Dala

I thought the season 2 opener of Master of Sex was a very strong episode. It cleaned up the house, getting rid of a number of characters whose storylines were exhausted, and making room for new ones. It also featured (at least) two great scenes, namely Barton’s failed attempt at sex with Margaret and Bill’s confrontation with his mother. I’ll keep watching.

  • antonialee

    It is summer, right?

  • GeoDiva

Satin pumps….What is this, the Junior prom?!?!

  • quiltrx

I think a bright necklace (not a bunch of different colors, just one or shades of one) and black shoes would have suited me better. And the sleeves look really hot. Cap sleeve or sleeveless for the season?

  • altermyego

I don’t want to use the word ‘blame’ but perhaps it’s the ‘desire’ for everyone to look as good as Olivia Pope in black and white that’s got everyone dressing this way.
And sorry, but so far no one is holding a candle to Kerry Washington.

  • largishbearishAtlish

Whats with the facial expression? Someone need a mydol/aspririn/xanex? cramps? bad clams? cell phone ringing and can’t get to it on the r/c?
