Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2012 Menswear Collection

Posted on June 21, 2011

Domenico and Stefano took one look around them at the candy-colored menswear dominating the season and loudly declared “NO.”

Eschewing the bright colors that everyone else seems to be embracing, they offered up a collection of crisp, masculine looks rendered in very muted tones of burgundy, bottle green, brown, gray, and of course, black and white. Conceptually, the focus was on their chosen motif of nets, with shirts, jackets, and pants all made by strips of leather and material woven into a large mesh that evoke netting. Many of them are interesting, but look extremely difficult to wear well. The pants are pleated and cuffed (even the shorts) and evoke that old school working man Italian aesthetic that they love so much. Some of it probably wouldn’t work for us, but in our fantasy world where we get to buy entire collections of menswear at once, we’re still arguing over which one of us gets which pieces.

Nice. Especially the third look, the shorts look like he just happened upon a stream and wanted to go wading, so he rolled up his pants (really his longer shorts.)

Well now, T&L. You can fight over the pieces, so long as you leave the models to me. I might even share.

all i see is one giant 6-pack…

Oh I know. The guy in the middle of the 6th row in particular. Practically ripping the runway open with those waves in his stomach! (It makes more sense in my head, and it’s early.)

Made a similar comment before I read yours! ;-) And I’m usually not one to go for the “hunks”.

Nice to see the beefy male models returning to the catwalk.

That’s exactly what I thought as I looked through these.  Wow!!

Indeed. I was tired of seeing all those twinks.

They always have the absolute HOTTEST models in the business.

Couldn’t agree more. Dark, romantic, masculine, cut but not cartoonish, I’ll take the Dolce and Gabbana boys over the beefcake Dirk Bikkembergs boys and skinny, effeminate male models any day.

Man, there’s nothing like a good looking man in a well cut suit. Nothing.

To the model in the sixth row, second column: Hello, Luvah!

Sheer pants? What the hell is THAT all about?

It’s about crazy. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

Also, grey and black? Looks like my old Catholic school uniforms.

LOVE the suits and SOME of the casual wear. I can’t get behind the mesh, though. It reminds me too much of white trash jocks in high school who wore mesh shirts outside of their work outs. With nothing under them. Skanky.

Nice. Some of it is the usual runway silliness like the first netting top with the tabs sticking up, but the ones from row 4 down are okay.  Also hating the half sheer pants and shorts. On the other hand, love the suits and when it’s not too crazy the woven netting works.

Fourth row, last column: somebody didn’t check their collar! That’s bugging my fashion OCD slightly, lol. And were the men pouting because they couldn’t wear crazy mini skirts with long sheer skirts over them? Is this their answer? Boys: girls can’t pull it off ever. What made you think you could get away with it? Let me just help you in removing those ugly things. ;)

That is a lot of good-looking men, but I especially have my eye on the youth, 2nd row from the bottom, far right.  I would very much like to despoil him.

Second row center.  Magnificent gray suit on a gorgeous man. I love the cut of the jacket a lot.  I will never get the idea of dress shoes without socks.  EYEW!  Anyone who’s tried that out discovers how uncomfortable it is.  Though the wide mesh looks are interesting they are mostly not wearable.  (at least not by normal humans)

There’s that one muscle (on many totally ripped men) where the torso joins the hip. It looks like nothing so much as where a Barbie or Ken doll’s torso is attached to the legs. Not a pretty picture for me. But then I’m only getting used to looking at these amazing six packs–how do they do it? I mean beyond spending 23 hours in the gym and eating nothing but protein? I’ll admit it’s not totally to my taste. As for the clothing, I’m in agreement with most everyone about the sheer shorts/pants–why?

      Ewwww. Sheer pants?

      • Anonymous

        Yeessss! Sheer pants!

D&G need to ask themselves if anything they design could feasibly be sold by International Male.  If the answer is yes (sheer pants and shorts) it’s best not to include them.  Because when even David Gandy looks silly in something no one can wear it.

      • margaret meyers

Thanks, Dina,  I had forgotten all about International Male.  25 years ago my husband thought their stuff was mighty sophisticated.  Hah!

For some reason, this post is showing up for the third time in my feed ~ and I’ve “read” it the other two times. But I don’t mind!

I just scrolled down to look at the bare chested bodies. The clothes are pedestrian. Nothing exciting. I’ll stick to Versace.

Y’all are mentioning the sheer pants but is that sheer jumper?

David Gandy and Noah Mills are divine! Anything would look good on them, but ok, it helps that the clothes are great too. D&G are consistently making interesting and wearable quality clothes. I salute you!

Are we referring to clothes or men here, hmmm?

Wait, I’m sorry, was I supposed to be looking at the clothes?
