In or Out: Kim Cattrall at the GLAAD Media Awards

Posted on May 16, 2011

Kim Cattrall attended the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco in a little black dress paired with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes. She was honored with the Golden Gate Award, which is presented to media professionals who have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community.

“Kim Cattrall has not only grown acceptance of our community through storylines on shows like Sex and the City, but used her platform to speak out for equality,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios. “We are proud to honor such a talented and passionate advocate.”

Does anyone else cringe when “grow” is used as an active verb? Anyway, well done, Kim. We love you. We don’t love your look, however; not entirely. Please forgive us.

Oh, Samantha. We so wanted to love you in this. Since it’s Monday morning, let’s ease into our bitchery slowly by starting off with the good points. Everything from the waist up looks great: the bodice fits and flatters (although it’s a bit thick and stiff-looking), the necklace is gorgeous and the hair and makeup look great (but we think the whole look could have been helped with a slightly more dramatic face because a gal should get her drag on when the gays are honoring her). Now let’s work our way down. The skirt fits, but the length doesn’t flatter and we tend not to like lace edges because it looks too literally like lingerie. And finally, her shoes look like Christmas craft projects and turn the whole look – which could have been classic and sexy – into something that looks a little cheap. Hem that skirt, put on a contrasting belt and a pair of shoes that don’t look homemade and this one could have been a winner.

VOTE NOW!

IN! You ungrateful bitches! She looks sexy and fabulous!

OUT! Couldabin a  gold medal, but she didn’t stick the dismount!

I don’t think she’s dressed her age. The cut of the dress emphasizes all the bagginess that older gals get. That’s nothing to be ashamed of, but she should dress in regard to it, not like she doesn’t have it. Also, I don’t care what you babes say, those are some ugly necklaces. But yes, those ARE some cheap looking shoes. OUT. Will you be doing a red carpet feature of the GLAAD Media awards? I love those bitches.

Dress her age?  I hate this age appropriate BS.  Grown women are quite cable of deciding their own comfort level.  We should all  gear towards being event appropriate and not to some ageist notion of what women over 40 should and should not wear.

Kim looks fantastic – period.  Don’t love this outfit though, but in no way is she wearing something inappropriate.

        • http://www.thirteen.org/program-content/downton-dish-season-3-episode-1/ Gotham Tomato

I agree that it’s not inappropriate, but it is kind of matronly, and I think it’s that lace over satin that makes it look so. But I think it would look matronly on a 25 year old too. And it doesn’t photograph well.

          –GothamTomato

        • Nancy lee

She has loose folds of skin hanging over her dress near her armpits!! Yes, of course older women are free to dress like they are still 25 years old, but most of the time it looks ridiculous on them. And I am pushing 50, so I say this as someone who tries to look gorgeous, fun and not like I am trying to be 20 again.

          • Nycloy

I really don’t see any loose folds of skin hanging from armpits.  In the photo where is slightly turned to the Rokk poster, there is a slight fold.  But that is due to the angle of body not her age!  I’m sure the same would happen to a 20 year old.  Kim is a little on the plump side, which I think is very healthy, but the bodice of her dress fits her fine.  Still don’t like the dress though.  FYI, I’m in my mid 40’s and love to wear fun clothes too.  I eat a healthy diet and workout and could easily wear the same clothes as did in my 20’s but feel as though I have evolved (on many levels).  I just can’t see were Kim is guilty of any of that!   Am I missing something?

            • jessamyn

Actually, the problem in this case is that the top of the dress is so heavily constructed, the points are curving into Kim’s flesh and squishing it slightly – and in one shot, where she’s turned, it’s pulling at her flesh and causing a strange line. Her flesh is fine; the dress is to blame.

          • Jane

Oh for gods sake, unless you’re a stick you don’t have concave armpits. Congrats to the skinny women but for the rest of us, we don’t need something else to try to cover according to some predetermined idea of what beauty is.

            • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Jane, I think I love you.

I love the dress, and I think she looks great in it. She looks great everywhere except her feet. Those shoes have to go. But, she’s Kim Cattrall. I think she should be able to wear whatever the hell she wants. I’m giving her an IN, despite the shoes.

      • Meg

It’s a strapless LBD. She’s a middle aged woman with a great body. It’s age inappropriate how?

I don’t love the outfit but like @9e9654c3ca4aa3b0c3c99ea8845d7005:disqus, don’t think it’s age inappropriate at all.

Ay-yi-yi-yi-yi. This is why lace is a bad trend.

I’m guessing her shoes were an attempt at ruby slippers, a nod to being honored by Friends of Dorothy, so points for that though.

As I was scrolling down the first photo I was thinking, “Not bad,” UNTIL I got to waist level and then oh, did the opinion change.  Correct as usual, TLo–the lace at the hem does nothing for the dress, the shoes can’t be justified,  and I think the whole skirt part of the dress is a little too pouffy.  I can’t really give her an “OUT” though, because the top half is so right.  Can we add a category, like “NO DECISION”, for these occasional fence-sitter outfits?

Those shoes…….they look like some post-apocalypse version of the ruby slippers.  Plus I bet they leave awful lines on her feet.  Ouch!

Also, the black is totally draining her. She looks so much better in colour (Brit kitten in the house).

Plus, you can ‘grow’ sunflowers, or your hair or whatever so not sure I am on board with the grammar bitchery, although it sounds a bit affected with abstract concepts. Could they not just say ‘promoted’? It’s not like she single-handedly planted the tiny, defenceless seed of gay acceptance, watered it and protected it from the wind, frost and nibbly critters all on her own.

Your comment about hair and makeup was an excellent point and something I noticed immediately. Over the weekend I watched a number of old SATC episodes and always admired Samantha’s hair and makeup. In these images she looks like she barely tried. Getting her drag on would’ve definitely bumped this look up a few notches.

In this context, yes using the word “grow” as a verb sounds silly. When talking about plants it is fine: “These plants grow well in the shade.”

As for the outfit, meh. Not thrilled with the dress, but I still find her to be a lovely woman. I dare to dream I could age that well.

I like the necklace, but nothing else here seems to work.  The dress looks stiff and heavy above the waist.  The lace hem wouldn’t be bad if it was a better length.  The shoes are an odd choice.  The combination of hem length and shoes seems to give her cankles.  She needs a pedicure.  I guess that about covers everything visible here.

    • ailsieengland

It’s completely fine to use “grown” as an active transitive verb, as in, “He grew the plant”, “She grew her hair”. You wouldn’t say “The plant was grown by him” (passive sentence). However… that’s for things that actually grow. It makes ABSOLUTELY no sense at all to say she “has grown acceptance”. It’s a nonsense, and the phrasing makes it sound like she was the one who came to accept their community. It’s just a terribly, terribly phrased sentence. Sigh. (I’m a linguistics student, sorry…)

Also, sadly, for me she is out from head to toe. The dress is boring and not very flattering, and the shoes and necklace are super ugly.

The skirt length may have worked with different shoes…but she could get away with about 4 inches off the length.  Those spider-woman shoes are pretty horrid…the glitter is over-the-top!

More color on face and a bit of a fluff of the hair would also have helped…she looks tired and plain in some of the pics.  The one where she’s holding the award she has color on her lips and a full smile, she looks much brighter.

It’s a strapless LBD. She’s a middle aged woman with a great body. It’s age inappropriate how?

IN.  I actually think that skirt length is very good on her.  Occasionaly, when she is in a shorted skirt it makes her torso look stumpy and wider than it is.  this skirt elongates her very nicely.  I can go either way on the lace hem, probably looked fine in person, lace just doesn’t photo well ever.  The shoes, same thing, either way.  I like the punch of color and guess (hope) the texture looked better in person.

Out, because of the shoes (and maybe the skirt–it seems to depend on the camera angle how bad the skirt looks). I am one of those who feels that, though she does look great from the waist up, she is showing off why Helen Mirren wisely wears so many shrugs and little jackets.  Kim has a beautiful body and the dress is terrific and she is very good to look at, but… there are imperfections and they do have to do with age. If she feels that they don’t need covering up, I don’t mind.

NO.  I took one look at the wrong-length hem (for her…or for this dress… or something) and then the lacey edged slapped me across the face, and the red shoes slapped me again.  Ug-ly.  No pedicure?  What is she thinking?  I mean, the obviously wrong thing are the prostitute shoes and working up to the laced edge hem.  I like her; I enjoy how she’s aging, but not this look in its entirety.

Actually, the problem in this case is that the top of the dress is so heavily constructed, the points are curving into Kim’s flesh and squishing it slightly – and in one shot, where she’s turned, it’s pulling at her flesh and causing a strange line. Her flesh is fine; the dress is to blame.

The shoes (plus the unpainted toenails – in this case, NOT a good look!) don’t complement a damned thing here – OUT!

Kim ALWAYS looks like she should be sitting in some dark dive bar on a thirsday at 430 smoking a virginia slim and drinking a Harvey Wall Banger.

       OUT OUT OUT.  Just…no.

      Couldabin, shouldabin, isn’t in.

      OUT!

Yes! I, too, cringe when “grow” is used as an active verb! I like everything but the shoes. Smooches, from Emmylou

      Out.
Those shoes are so unflattering that it honestly makes me sad.

it just looks like she put no effort in for the event. The shoes look like an afterthought, the dress thrown on from last night’s party, and big necklace as an attempt to dress it up and the hair was combed with her fingers. OUT. Big time.

       out! its the awful shoes.

Out. The aforementioned shoes are awful and tbh, I don’t even like that dress.

This is an easy OUT, unfortunately. Great from the waist up (except for the make-up). Unbelievably lame from waist down. My aunt from the Outskirts of Smalltown would have done a better job.

You guys should develop an app that scrutiznes outfits.  Let’s say I’m going to the Private School Parent Fundraiser and I need to kick it the eff up.  I’d take a picture download it to the app and it would say — “craft project shoes! Must change” or “add a contrasting belt and you are FIERCE.”  Work on that please.  You can thank me later.

Shoes, bad. Fabric of dress, ugh. Length & hem of dress, blergh.

      Ms. Cattrall herself, still awesome.

Unfortunately, her innate awesomeness cannot overwhelm the fashion math. OUT, with sadface.

      OUT.  And get a pedicure….ew.

You can blame Bill Clinton for starting the “grow” as a transitive verb trend. Everyone thought he was wrong for saying he wanted to “grow the economy,” but now it’s commonplace.

She is so much prettier than this, not a flattering look at all.

What the heck is wrong with you people? There’s nothing wrong with “growing some tomatoes” in the yard – is it just the abstraction you don’t like? You want to talk about weird verbs, try “outing” someone. It wasn’t even a verb originally. I’m giving KC an IN because I think she looks fine. So there!

Out. I literally gulped when I scrolled down to the feet insects!
