Janelle Monae is lucky that the lighting is bad at the screening of her new movie Is God Is, because if we could see her dress more clearly, we’re pretty sure we’d get pretty mean about it.

It’s just a pile of bows with a ruff collar on top. Maybe it’s more interesting than that, but because it’s almost entirely black, who can tell? She’s just a massive void holding a pretty cute bag. People always complain about the lighting at these things, but there mostly isn’t much lighting set up for your average premiere or NY screening. It’s not the fault of the PR people who set this up that you can’t see her dress. It’s entirely the fault of her and her stylist for picking it for an event like this. Stars and their teams know what the branding of a film is going to look like (which is why you see so many of them dressing to match it for the big films), so it’s on them to pick something that will stand out in a poorly lit setting with a dark backdrop. We know Janelle is pretty strict about only wearing black, white and red, but you’ve still got to pick something to wear that we can actually see. At any rate, that’s way too many bows, lady.
