One Battle After Another star Chase Infiniti has been unveiling one eye-popping look after another all year long, making her one of our favorite new red carpet attendees. She always brings it. But her looks on Oscar night left us a little deflated.

She’s shown a preference for big shapes and unusual silhouettes, so this is pretty much in line with what she’s been sporting throughout the promo season and campaign. We admit to not loving it. She looks gorgeous — it would be difficult for her to look otherwise — but we don’t love the color and that massive mega-flounce is clearly weighing the dress down on one side. That’s too much pulling to look artful and deliberate and if you saw any video of her on the red carpet, she really had to drag that thing around. But the hair and makeup are gorgeous. We’re not convinced that choker is the best choice for a halter.

Some stars use the Vanity Fair party to change into something more comfortable and some use the occasion to change into something that would have been inappropriately flashy or casual for the ceremony. This is kind of splitting the difference. We wouldn’t call this an effortless frock, but it’s a lot easier to wear than most of her choices. The black and navy color combo is muddy, which leaves the dress unphotogenic while also serving to obscure just how wildly over-embellished it is. It looks heavy and it’s not offering enough visual interest to make up for it.
