And now, a reassessment. We didn’t love Anne Hathaway’s look for the Oscars and we said so in our Cosmopolitan writeup, but in the light of day and after two decent nights’ sleep, we’re willing to take a second look at it.

The dress is quite pretty, in fact. We don’t generally love black-backed florals but we tend to be forgiving of them if the floral is simple and monochromatic, as it is here, for the most part. Our initial assessment called the look dated, and we still think that mermaid hem doesn’t look particularly fresh, but our issue here is less with the design as it is with the styling. We don’t love the belt or the gloves, but we can see the argument that they complete the look. What bugs us the longer we look at this are the jewelry choices, which are pulling focus, and the Princess Cathy hair, which is a bit much with so much else going on. Not to do a “Who wore it best” thing, but Rose Byrne sported a similar design and became our best dressed of the night largely because the styling was so restrained so the dress could do all of the talking. A dress like this calls for a more subtle approach.
