Jacob Elordi put on his lady sweater and rescued Margot Robbie from the 18th Century shipwreck she just time-traveled from for the latest Wuthering Heights photo call in Sydney. Prepare yourselves.
We’re sorry, but that just looks ridiculous on her. As we said in last week’s podcast, Margot Robbie’s promotional style is extremely calculated and businesslike, in the sense that, as a producer of both Barbie and Wuthering Heights, she adopted a very unsubtle, very team player, very branding-oriented approach to how she would use the fashion at her disposal in order to sell tickets. We would be remiss if we didn’t point out that it very clearly played a part in the success of both films. She’s using her own looks to create viral or buzz-worthy moments, which in turn creates curiosity or excitement about the project and ultimately equals dollar signs for her. We say all of this with respect. She’s using fashion on the red carpet largely in the way it should be used. What we wrinkle our noses at is the obviousness of it and the idea, which is obvious to our eyes at least, that she gets nothing from these outfits and has no interest in them. They’re promotional tools. Well done, but we wouldn’t call this style. There is an interesting feminist argument to be made about her dressing this way to literally empower herself but we don’t think we’re the guys to make it. Don’t get us wrong, we absolutely understand this as her taking complete control in order to enrich and advance herself. No one’s forcing poor Margot to dress this way. He, on the other hand, looks fantastic — and yes, he’s wearing a sweater from the Chanel Spring women’s collection. It looks fantastic on him and we love both the jeans and the belt. Just a really well-styled, photogenic look that plays entirely to his strengths. It honestly makes her outfit look all the weirder standing next to it.
