A Complete Unknown star Elle Fanning came to her very first Oscars to present and also to serve up a little bit of chic salt-and-pepper shaker action.
AT THE OSCARS IN GIVENCHY COUTURE
Given how much time we’ve spent railing against lace, bows and Fannings wearing things that wash them out, it may surprise you to learn that this was one of our favorite looks of the night. It’s just so pretty and perfect for her. To our way of thinking, it’s better for an ingenue to evoke Audrey Hepburn rather than copying her style outright, simply because the latter option will always come off like cosplay rather than style. This isn’t in any sort of style that Audrey would have favored in her heyday, but it has that same youthfully romantic, vaguely Parisian sense that embodied her most iconic looks. She’s extremely well-suited to mid-Century styles and she absolutely lights up whenever she wears them.
AT THE VANITY FAIR OSCAR PARTY IN GIVENCHY
This feels like a simpler, sharper take on the previous dress. It’s still romantic and French, with a slight mid-Century feel to it, but it’s also that thing that Audrey popularized above everything else: the perfect Little Black Dress. We could’ve done without the watteau back on this one, however.
