We said recently that we are totally over the trend for capes and opera coats on the red carpet, largely because they tend to get used as a way to add drama to a fairly basic dress. What we’re all about now is the trend for trench coats and overcoats on the red carpet; not just because the weather’s getting chilly in places all over, but because the simplicity of the style requires a little more effort to pair it with the right outfit so that they complement each other and produce a more interesting whole than either item alone. We think Demi Moore’s look at the LA premiere of Landman is a good example of how to do it.
The coat is sharp, has a formal vibe and looks really great on her. We tend to like the dress quite a bit less, but that only speaks to our point about using the overcoat judiciously. The juxtaposition of soft and structured works really well for her. We’re a bit surprised that an all-black ensemble looks so great on her, but we suppose you could call that the Morticia Effect.
