When we were cycling through the shots of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first few hours of their Nigerian sojourn early this morning, we both paused over our coffee cups when we got to the above picture. That’s probably one of the best pictures of them we’ve ever seen (rivaling the famous raindrops shot) and one of the best pictures of any royal engagement. Yes, we know it’s only pseudo-royal, but they’re in Nigeria by invitation of the government, so it’s about as official an engagement as the Sussexes can swing. People tend to get extremely annoyed when we make this point, but this exact image is exactly what the royal family lost when they didn’t try to accommodate them. This kind of open, emotional engagement is what they’re both really good at and as the only royal parents of biracial children, they have an ease and sincerity in photo opportunities like this that no one else in the family can attain. It’s just charming and lovely and anyone who would shit on it should fix their hearts or die.

They look cute. Her dress is not in a color we love, but it’s set off really nicely by the relatively subtle gold jewelry. We tend to think they knew they’d be receiving those necklaces and dressed accordingly, which is pretty smart.
