We’re still puzzled by this project. Nothing against the above stars, but it just feels like they lifted the title of a once-popular movie and then made a series that doesn’t look or feel remotely like it. We love ourselves a good “married spies” story, but why invite comparisons to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and then make a series with a different premise?
Oh, sorry. We forgot an introduction. Here: Mr. and Mrs. Smith stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine hit the London premiere red carpet in some low-key looks.
MAYA ERSKINE IN SCHIPARELLI
We feel like both of them needed to step up their games more. We try to consider the venue when discussing celebrity style, and this one looks like a fairly large Amazon-funded premiere. They’re not posing in front of an easel at a screening, where both of these outfits would be fine. Anyway, she looks good, if un-memorable. The literal keyhole is kind of fun, but the styling is a little lacklustre.
DONALD GLOVER IN ZEGNA
Donald, we’re gonna give it to you (you’ll pardon the term) straight: You cannot tuck a bulky sweater into a bulky pair of pants and then expect a ribbon-thin belt to do its job. The effect is sloppy and unflattering to him. We want to offer some encouragement, but we hate that peach color so much that it’s blinding us to any of this outfit’s good qualities. The coat’s nice. The shoes don’t go.
ABOUT THE TV SERIES:
Two lonely strangers land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?
All eight episodes will be available on February 2, 2024, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. From co-creators and executive producers Donald Glover (Swarm, Atlanta)and Francesca Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo), the series, a reimagining of the 2005 film, stars Glover as John Smith and Maya Erskine (PEN15) as Jane Smith.
