Coming hot off his critically acclaimed (but evidently not awards worthy, dammit) role in All of Us Strangers, Andrew Scott will be portraying Patricia Highsmith’s talented creation, Tom Ripley in a new limited series for Netflix, adapting her book The Talented Mr. Ripley.

– Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott), a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York, is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder. The drama series is based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling Tom Ripley novels.
– Andrew Scott plays Tom Ripley. Dakota Fanning plays Marge Sherwood. Johnny Flynn plays Dickie Greenleaf. Additional cast include: Elliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy with John Malkovich.

It looks gorgeous – much prettier to look at than the usual visual sludge that permeates your average Netflix series. While we can’t say a new version of this story was needed, it has been nearly a quarter century since it was last adapted and there’s a very good argument to be made that gay actor would serve the part better than Matt Damon did. We’ll be seated, of course – for Andrew Scott, for the gorgeous cinematography, for the locations and for the cast. Looking forward to this one.
