A whole bunch of promotional stuff just dropped for the upcoming Mean Girls musical adaptation, including the trailer… and we have what?

OPINIONS. First, let’s start with the “not your mother’s Mean Girls” tagline, because that’s kind of hard to accept when this one has the same jokes, the same costumes, and even some of the same cast members. We guess we’re a little surprised at how hard they’re selling this as a new twist while presenting something that looks like a parody of the original:

But what strikes us as really strange here is how much they’re playing down the film’s entire reason for existing: it’s a MUSICAL. And it was a fairly successful one on stage for a time. Even the official press release plays this down:

“From the comedic mind of Tina Fey comes a new twist on the modern classic, MEAN GIRLS. New student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics,” ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika). However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.”

We realize this one’s got a whole two months of promotional releases before it premieres, but it seems really weird to be downplaying the one thing that sets it apart from the original.
